    hey!

i'm just wonderin if anybody knows anything about gluten, and it's effects on the body. i think i may allergic/intollerant to it. if i eat any bread (white, wholemeal, granary etc.) apart from brown wheaten bread my stomach really swells up. it's the same with pasta, and rice (both basmati/long grain and wholemeal, not sure about brown/wild rice). i don't think it's starch because i can eat tortilla wraps (practically living on the things these days). so i THINK it's gluten...

i have not been to a dietrician yet, but i will go if it's necessary. so if anyone else has similar problems or knows anything about this i'd really appreciate hearing what you have to say.

    cheers

Go to your local GP and organise to be tested for gluten intollerance. What you are stating does sound like a definite case of celiac- but go to a doctor and get it checked out.

Can also check out The coeliac Society Site - some useful stuff on there with noticeboards etc

    http://www.coeliac.ie/coeliacdisease.htm#06

But do go to the docs & get them to run the tests - can make a huge difference to how you feel.

I do not think there is not enough information here to suggest it could be
Coeliac Disease. I say this because Gluten is found in wheat, oats, barley
and rye; any bread with wheat (including brown wholemeal) would cause
the symptoms, as would tortillas. Rice does not contain any gluten so
it should not have any effect on you.

A swelling stomach/bloating is just one of the minor symptoms of CD.

I agree completely. Get professional advice. I cannot say much
other than I do not *think* it is Coeliac Disease - but I am not
a doctor, and different people have different reactions to gluten,
the gluten may differ in different types of bread etc.
