Hi i want to connect my computer to my tv so i can record programmes and films and stuff onto my computer. I know i'll need a graphics card with a TV-Out and a big hard drive but is there anything else i need?

Does any1 know of good software i can use? Also what does my tv have to have in order for me to be able to do it?

    Thanks

you will need a Card with a TV IN!, not out.

you want to record to the computer and not from it.
It would depend on if you have Digital TV or normal, but a TV card would be ideal

As mentioned above - you need a TV input (or co-ax, or S-Video, or SCART) in to record from an external source.

Most (internal PCI) TV cards also have a bunch of inputs (if you still need them, as the card will also receive TV signal) for capturing from VCR, camcorder etc.

Some (few) graphics cards feature inputs (ATi All-in-Wonder) - You're probably better off with the TV card as that allows your to upgrade your graphics card later on without worrying about losing video capture functionality.

also, a TV or DVI card will also have the Software included which you require for recording

True - but I use Virtual Dub (free) for that anyway (but it's crap for editing, just capture)

Go with a hauppage tv card - they seem to be better supported, with lots of third party apps etc.

I find my Aver TV (maplin) to be very good. Even works automatically in Linux.
    And cheap to boot.

You'll find that most TV cards use the same BTC (?) chipset.

    Thanks

Komplett have two, this one which you connect to the USB port of your PC. Not sure how good it is, but it is only 60 Euro.

The Hauppauge WinTV USB 2 Personal Video Recorder looks good, I am trying to drop hints that it would look REALLY good under the tree with my name on it this Christmas. Same deal, plugs into the USB port, but does it's own hardware encoding so won't impact performance of your PC. I've also seen some good reviews of it.
