Canon Ixus 40

Hi all, I'm going buying a new camera sometime this month, and have pretty much narrowed it down to either the Ixus 40 or perhaps the Sony dsc v1, both of which are available for around the 300 mark. I know canon are generally considered to have better quality images, but this Sony has 4x optical zoom and a 5mp sensor, as opposed to 3x and 4mp on the ixus, so they should about balance each other out. I'm an amateur casual user, so I don't need total control over settings, but I do want some control and I want a camera that will take good shots in the pub as well as in ideal conditions - the nifty hologram the sony has is a big plus here i imagine - or is it just a gimmick? Other things that are coming into the decision for me are media ( i prefer sd since it's cheaper and my laptop has an sd slot), battery life (mediocre on both), video (quite good on both) and size/looks where the canon is well ahead in my opinion.
So, has anyone used both and have they any advice? (longshot, i know)
Even if you haven't used either, any particular arguments on sony vs canon would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    tuco
