    Well here we go,
A win tonite will almost certainly put Ireland at least in second place in the group. And it should be a bloody easy game, although Malta are gonna defnd like fuk. I reckon 3-0 with Quinnie first on the scoresheet. Come on Ireland !

Oh, and the result will be 0-0, and the match will be posponed due to an earthquake 10 mins in.

You pessimistic ba$terd Helv 0-0 my ass. Match kicks off at 17.30 irish time and we're gonna whoop some Maltese ass. Oh yeah and it's two bloody nil to the Yugoslavs against Macedonia already after only 5 mins. Just saw it on Eurosport site.

Holy Fu(k it's 4-0 to Ygo at half time. Good sign for us when we go to Macedonia next month, if they're that bad ...

btw i reckon it will be 4-0 to us. Robbie Keane first goal and a hat-trick. Kinsella, if hes playing, the other. If not, Quinn. And I hope to GOD that McCarthy has learnt his lesson for the last game of not playing ****ing Carsley, ever! Put Matt Holland in mid-field for ****-sake!!!!!

Lads I reakon you should edit all those comments and score out. Another pathetic game by the Irish I mean MALTA scored TWICE ffs what next. We were very very lucky. Lets hope Croatia do us a favour next month.

    Gandalf.

Undoubtedly the most brutal Irish display since the 0-0 with Lichtenstein. We were fu<king fortunate to win that after the state of our performance in the second half.

Malta looked the more likely to win for most of the second half.

    Shambolic!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 483 ✭✭Helv

And why is that????? LEE CARSLEY!!!!

BTW Gandy, we dont want Croatia to win!!! We'll lose aginst Macedonia and we want Yugoslavia to win. Or a draw would be OK cos we would go through on results.

Well yes I concede that Ireland played a pure $hite performace, excuses can't be made about lack of fitness after the previous 7-8 days. There's no doubt that Keano is always the missing link in our bad games, but you just can't have a team that rely totally on one man ffs. Oh yeah Helv, I disagree with yer opinions on Lee Carsley, he jad a bad game yesterday but what about his performance last Saturday against Croatia, he worked his socks off and prevented a lot of attacks in that game. Ireland are through at this stage to 2nd place in my opinion. Keano will be back by October and the confidence should be back also at that stage. Tis very tight though.
Oh and just thought I should clear something elkse up - All second placed teams make it through to the playoffs. The team with the best record in 2nd place automatically qualifies for the finals. The other eight are paired with home and away legs of which the 4 winners qualify. That's 5. Then there's the 9 winners of the groups, that's 14 and finally there's the hosts Belgium and Holland - 16.
so if we do get 2nd spot there's no doubt that we are in the playoffs.

So how do they work out the best second place from the groups of teams of 6? Is it they take away the bottom team and the results of the country in second place when they played them? I remember hearing of that, or something like it. So the teams in contention at the moment for an automatic place are :
    Us (yay), Portugal, France/Russia, Turkey.

The team with the best record in second place is calculated by something like an average of how many points (and goals if needs be) they got per game.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 483 ✭✭Helv

So its not really fair then, cos there would be 2 of the really **** teams in a group of 6.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,035 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

It's simple lads. If you finish second then your record against 1st, 3rd and 4th are the only games taken into account. This means whether we like it or not that Turkey are almost certain to qualify unless disaster strikes when they play Germany. So forget that option.

They play-offs is a home and away leg, isnt it? Well at least we wont have to play Holland again!

    Negativity, negativity, negativity ...
Don't worry lads we're gonna top our group, I'm telling ya. Mark My Words, Ireland will have the most points out of Group 8 at the end of 10/10/99.

Well I can definatly see Croatia win. But I really think we will struggle against Macedonia and I think we are more likely to draw than get a win. So, it looks like we'll be waiting around for another 2 years! (Yes I'm totally pessimistic when it comes to football and the Ireland performances so you will be surprised when they win)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭jArgHA

Musi ya sarky ba$terd. Ok so I got that one wrong. But hey I predicted 2-1 to Ireland against Yugo last week and also predicted Croatia to beat us by a goal so that's 2 out of 3 predictions right. Check those boards if ya don't believe me. I have a lot of faith in the team at the mo and bet you a fiver that we'll top the group. You on ??

Jargha - you have restored my faith that we will top the group. After all you predicted a 3-0 win against Malta. I think I'd prefer if you were predicting disaster against Macedonia. smile.gif
