No signal on an unlocked (UK) Nokia 5110..?

    Howdy all,

Bought an old Nokia 5110 for a fiver on eBay (yes, the 'brick' model... — but it's only for a 10-year-old kid). The guy said it was unlocked, but when I stick my Meteor SIM in it I can't get any network signal. I downloaded a dct-3 unlocker, but when I put in the code it gave me, the readout just said that the phone wasn't SIM-locked (like the guy had said). I checked to see was the network selection on automatic and it was, so tried manual selection, but it only offers a choice between 'Eircell', 'Digifone' and 'Irl 03'...? And I don't have a security code for it, so I can't restore factory settings.

    Any tips? Have I bought a £5 paperweight? (c/w charger :o )

Any phone made before 2001 won't know Meteor and will display IRL-03 or 272-03 instead. If you have a new SIM card, the display may still show "Meteor" since it retrieves the name from the SIM.

a 5110 is a single band phone. meteor require dual bands.

Not necessarily, Meteor are running on 900MHz in the vast majority of areas. Only in Dublin and some smaller towns do they use 1800MHz.

...all I can say is it's working (in Limerick, anyway) :)

£5 for the 'phone & charger
€20 for a Meteor SIM with €20 credit
    500 piggypoints (€5 discount)
    Total: one cheap "stocking-filler"... :D

(until she drops it on her toe and breaks it....)
