Yes, they can refuse your application on any grounds they wish. That is not to say that when compulsory redundancies are being exercised that you are off the hook.

AFAIK: volunteering may also render mortgage protection, and other insurances void, but in practice I believe it is ignored as to whether it was voluntary or compulsory

....volunteering may also render mortgage protection, and other insurances void, ...

Never heard that before. Do you have links to that info, or where you heard that?

Short answer - It depends on the policy small print of course / thread carefully.

Long winded - It depends on the policy small print of course, having been through 3 rounds of redundancies and represented staff this question was often fielded. Basically if you volunteer for redundancy then you have quit your job effectively, on that basis it is viewed differently from compulsary redundo (i.e. you may have still had a viable position in the company). Many mortgage protection policies will not allow the protection to be invoked if you quit your job. Basically however our HR dept. operated a no ask, no answer policy, i.e. if a mortgage protection company rang enquiring about the redundancy of a particular person, they would not volunteer information regarding the nature (voluntary / compulsary) unless asked.

Yep, more than likely. We were told they were seeking redundancies last week and people had to apply for voluntary redundancy with the knowledge that we could be turned down. After that, if the numbers needed haven't been met, they'll do compulsory redundancies but may still refuse those who volunteered.

I wonder if yer in the same company I am - was this last Tuesday??
