    hi folks

i manged to lose some files i had on my desktop, or they magically disappeared, but thats not my problem now. its much more sinsiter.....

i installed norton go back to retrieve (to no avail) my files, and decided to remove this program as it seemed the hd light on my laptop was all the time accessing stuff and was bugging me.

i had to reboot to finished the removal of go back, then when i was rebooting i kept getting the g back screen on the boot up, windows xsp failed to boot........no matter what i did

i put in my xp pro disk and tried to install xp again but it said it couldnt install on the c: drive ? i have 30 gigs of stuff on here so not willing to do a foramt.

i did the recovery mode and could see my c: drive here and stuff but what can i do in dos mode?

i wrote a new boot block and this time windows booted it seemed, but at the final hurdle, before the log on screen it says cant find autochk, ........and it crashes?

i dont have any automatic system recovery disk, anyway this isnt much use as i will lose all my gigs of mp3s if i do this method as the drive is formatted afterwards

does anyone know how i can boot up ? can i install a new boot log from the recovery console?

my spec is p4 2.4, lots of ram and win xp pro.

    thanks folks

    EM

Did you mean to say you went into safe mode and booted to command prompt? If you didint go in to safe mode f8 when your booting up and try to load it with networking. If you have reformat to get it back up and running at least you can backup your stuff over the network.

or just reinstall windows over the existing installation, making sure you DO NOT format the drive while doing so. If you have a regular XP install cd, this shouldn't be a problem, but if you have a Dell install cd (or something similar) it might default to formatting first... so check that out first.

There will be next to no file loss if you just reinstall over the existing installation, you will only lose some windows install specific files (if you know what i mean). Regular data like downloaded stuff, and documents should all be fine.
