    Hi,

Can anyone help. I need to hire a car from Cork airport and have no credit card. All the places I have tried require one. Does anyone know of a company that doesn't insist on credit card?

    Many thanks. :)

AFAIK most car hire companies insist on one.

The reason that you need a credit card is in the even of accidents etc.

You have an accident etc. and they will slam a few grand on your credit card to pay for it. The car rental companies do whats called "Pre-authourising" on your card before you take the car. It basically means that before you get the car keys, that your credit card is pre-authourised to give a few hundred more euros in case of problems.

Say you rent a car for 200 Euros for a week. They charge your card for 200 Euros, and Pre-auth it for 800 Euros. So you need a card with a big limit to rent cars too.

I know so much because I lost a 900 Euro pre-auth last year to a company who was too lazy to follow up on the insurance of the car that crashed into my car - even though I wasn't in the car when it happened.

Another point - the driver of the car must have the credit card in their name.
Because the contract is with the driver, the credit card must belong to the driver. No exceptions with that either. Legally, they can't pre-auth some other random not responsible for the car person.

    Hope this helps you somewhat,

    Good luck

I'm pretty sure it needs to be whoever is actually using the vehicle.

You could hire the car with your cc and get them named as an additional driver.

I hired a car from Hertz last year but in my mate's name (my arm was in a sling). My credit card paid for it and secured it. I did it through their website and picked up the car in Aberdeen. They had no problem with me paying and him driving - never even asked about it. I didn't know it was an issue.
