Transfer of OEM Licence

Just got a new laptop that came with XP Home and I would like to transfer the licence to an older laptop that I have.

    To expalin a bit more:

    New laptop:
    Compaq Presario AMD 64 3700+
I would like to dual boot XP 64/ Linux 64 Editions

    Old Laptop:
    Compaq Presario Celeron 533
Will run XP so I would like to transfer licenced edition to this.

    The Question:

Can I use the XP licnece/and software that I got with the new system on the old system?

I thought I read somewhere that part of the licence agreament you pressed F8 stated you could transfer the licence as long as it will only be on one system at one time.

    Any ideas?

    Muchas gracias......

I don't believe you can. You'd have to upgrade the old laptop somewhat in order to qualify it for an OEM licence. As in you have to add new hardware. Certain hardware doesn't could for OEM also (RAM I think).

Best bet would be to drop Microsoft an e-mail. They know best about the licencing issues but I'm pretty sure with OEM there's a nice "non-transferable" part on the sticker/licence.

M$ didn't get to have $50,000,000,000 in the kitty by generous software licences.

This is my understanding of their current scam..
The OEM license is bound to the original Hardware, chances are if it's a brand name PC it won't install on another brand. -

M$ would rather you buy a retail copy of XP or better still an upgrade copy, since if you upgrade an OEM license in most cases the upgrade copy is now bound to the hardware the OEM was bound to.

Note: microsoft licencing terms change all too often, eg: one favorite is a modified EULA in service packs/patches.

Also nowhere on thier web site is a definiton on what they mean by hardware..

No OEM Licence is locked to the PC it comes with, generally the recovery CD's that are supplied are locked to the BIOS of the original product so they cant be used to load Pro onto you new rig.

Sorry ! Call some dude called Bill in Seattle if you dont like it!

The specific part of the PC it is locked to is the CPU. If you transfer the CPU you can fully legally bring all licenced software with it. Thats why those people with 2 processers have to get a special licence or buy two copies of the software that they're installing.

Not that most people with 2 processors care about licencing!

I'm resonably certain that the software is licensed not to you, but to the laptop it came on. So technically, you can't install it legally on another machine, even if you remove it from the laptop.

It also means that if i steal your laptop, i legally can run your version of windows :p and you aren't entitled to a replacement. But if you want, you could still install it, i don't think anyone would find out :p

As for it "not installing" on other systems, thats true. But there are ways around that...

XP is allowed to be used on one laptop and one home pc , its in the EULA :D

Get the cd key of the one you have , assuming you have a recover cd and not actualy XP , obtain a simliar version of XP install it on home pc with the same cd key and thats it,

I don't know which is scarier... the fact microsoft give you the right to install one OS on two computers, or the fact that someone actually read the EULA!

I read various EULA's and searched the microsoft.com web site and I can find no mention of what physical device the license is bound to - lots of wolly legalese but nothing as simple as that. Also if that were the case then microsoft would be duty bound to clamp down on most resellers who sell windows OEM.

IMHO it seems that microsoft have a policy of allowing people to pirate products in which microsoft have a small share of the market, no competitior can under cut this and then when microsoft have almost total market share they let loose the BSA to force people to buy the products when there is almost no one using the by now incompatible competitiors version. I am probably wrong but the fact that up to windows 98 most non-oem versions would accept a high-5 as a serial number.

OFFICE XP (non-OEM) is allowed on the laptop of the primary designated user of a PC - if you find anything that allows a M$ OS to be used on two machine
    s I'd like to Know ;)
