    I don't get it.

Or maybe I just don't find it funny.

    It's just spamming muppetry.
Or possibly a play on the fact that no Irish person actually knows the national anthem.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,937 ✭✭✭fade2black

That's not quite true Bass..however I am with ya on this Rick chap....I want to laugh but the material is just too poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,242 ✭✭✭aodh_rua

I think a lot of people do, and that should be respected. Having so little to do on a Saturday night that you're compelled to start a thread derogating the national anthem and those who know it seems a bit pathetic.

!!! Was that directed at MOI? I didn't start the thread... I was making the point that so few people can actually recite it, other than the first couple lines.... most other countries' citizens, e.g. the USA know their entire National Anthem.
Most Irish people, on the other hand, will go:

    Sinne Firnna Fáil
A tá fé gheall ag Éirinn,
    buion dár slua
    Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn,
    la la la la la.

I know some people know the whole thing, and I do respect that.. but the majority of Irish people don't know it.

Anyway, this is getting off-topic... the fact that rick is a muppet :D

I'll bet he was secretly burning the tricolour in his back garden while he posted this...

    Geez, lighten up people!

Maybe clasic was the wrong word to use but i did get a series of mental images, most in the East stand surrounded by people all singing/mumbling this as the national anthem. And to me that memory is fun!

A personal rection that i should have explained more. I did not feel that this thread would start a converation however, otherwise i would have explained my thoughts.

I find it funny that the most idiotic and pointless threads are the ones that seem to grow the largest..(And like sideshow bob would say...I'm aware of the irony of me adding to that)

    Yeah that's me alright...
Fianna Fianna Fail hmm brmm derr durr dee daaww da daww,
neeerh neerrh nerrrrhh da da doo da doo da doooo-boppity-boppity-baw

It's all Irish gobbeldy-gook that I can't understand the meaning of, despite years of having it forced on me in school.
Isn't it a war march song anyway? - a bit daft for a country that considers itself neutral no?
I vote we change our national anthem to Mambo Number Five or Hey Macarena.

Ah yes but they the Americans had the good sense to write theirs in the language that the majority of their citizens speak. ;)

Sinn na Fianna Fail, ata faoi gheall ag Eireann
Bionn dar slua, thar thoinn do raining chuann
Fe'e bhaid bheith soar, seansir no sinseir fasta
Ni fhafager fionn thiorann na fionn thrall
Anocht a theim sa bhearna bheal, Le gheall ar Gael chun bhais no saol
Le gunna screach, fionn bpoilar na bpilear
Seo libh chanaig Amhran Na bhFiann

Learnt it in school and Irish college, and always proud to sing it when its on! Apoligies for the terrible spelling and possible made up words - I wrote it straight out of my head (i.e. phonetically), and was too proud to check it on google :o

I know Sinn na Fianna Fail, ata faoi gheall ag Eireann

But don't ask me to spell it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,880 ✭✭✭Raphael

I know the whole thing in English, and make a point of singing it as so

Soldiers are we, Who's lives belong to Ireland
Some have come, From a land beyond the waves
Sworn to be free, No more our ancient sireland
Shall shelter the despot or the sleep
Tonight we man the bhearna bheal
In Eireanns cause, come woe or wail
Mid cannons roar, and rifles peal
We will chant a soldiers song

Personally I think "Irelands Call" should be the anthem

Love Billy Connolly sketch on "God Save the Queen"... We are no longer a struggling nation here... but should fool everyone with a new ska national anthem :D

I speak Irish but I don't know more than the first few lines. Not the catchiest song.

Sinn na Fianna Fail, ata faoi gheall ag Eireann
    Shin-na fee-na fall, a taw phee ghall egg air-in

The only people who know the lyrics to the Irish national anthem are IRA and Sinn Féin supporters.

I find that if you wash your colours separatly from your whites you won't end up with gray t-shirts.
And NEVER EVER put red items of cloathing in a whites wash - they'll just be ruined!
