i'm off around europe for my sixth year holiday in july and this is probably the most useful website ever. you just bang 2 places in europe into the search box thing on the left and it tells you how long the train journey is, where to change etc. hope someone finds it usefulbahn.de (international guests)

what route you thinking of taking garth? the problem with our plan is that we spend most of our time in eastern europe and want to finish up in amsterdam. so basically that means once we finish in split in croatia we dunno what route to take to the dam! where in germany or italy is worth going?

Im goin interrailing during the summer as well. Has anyone been before and if so could you tell us of your experiences.
    How long you went for.
How many people you went with.
Places you thought were worth/not worth going to.
Best place you went to for shopping.
Mistakes that you made. (So that I won't make them :) )

Im goin with about 10 other people and ive been told that were probably gonna split up or hate each other by the end and other things along those lines.

Another site is SNCF but in order to get the fare prices you usually need to find a website relevant to the country (so SNCF is good for France and Bahn for Germany)...

I'm looking for Spanish train time tables at the moment if anyone has any links to that?

    <edit>

Wow - just found this site - tons of info on rail travel in general. I've spent 2 minutes on the site and I'm already considering getting a train to Japan going across Siberia via Moscow :D

    <edit again:D>

That seat61.com site above is cool - found the Spain details I was looking for fairly handy. For those who want to know the site is here

    top interrailing tip

Buy an international time table from Thomas Cooke Travel!

We went off a few years ago, fantastic way to spend a month, especially if you've just been in a class room for months (i was on the other side of the desk!) but having the timetable means that you can plan connecting trains etc when on the move..... most valuable thing we brought - oh and a swiss army ( knife!)

hiya I went interrailing for the month of June in 2001.. it was brilliant.
    Route:
flew from Shannon to Paris Beauvais.. Ryanair..
    Paris for 2 nites..
Orleans for 1 nite.. no need to go there.. although the city doensn't allow any traffic in .. all underground parking.. and trams it's class!!
then got train to Lyons.. 1 nite.. ok city had been before.. nice enough
next to Turin.. beautiful train journey.. not a lot to see in Turin but had to stop somewhre!
then Pisa.. leaning Tower is unbelieveable!!!
    then Florence..2 nites
    Rome.. 2 nites
    Pompeii.. 2 nites
    Sorrento.. 1 nite..
then for a crazy journey.. got train from Naples to Bari.. ferry over to Greece.. then train from Patras to Athens.. longest time ever travelling without a break!!!
stayed in Athens for 3 nites.. ferry strike.. had to get flight to Bari to stay on schedule.. had to meet friend in Amsterdam before flying home..
next then was Venice.. 2 nites..
    and onto Luxembourg.. 1 nite..
    Amsterdam.. cough/5 nites..
    Brussels.. 1 nite..
    Lille.. 1 nite..
    back to Paris.. 1 nite..
back to Brussels .. last nite..

flew home to Shannon again from Brussels Charleoi (Ryanair)

overall.. the whole trip was brilliant.. just wish we had more time!! we camped most of it.. to keep costs down .. and it worked!!

    any specific questions.. ask me!!

Be careful with interrailing in Croatia as there are not many trains and I don't think buses are covered in the interrail pass. It might work out cheaper to just pay for the transport without getting an interrail pass for that region.
