Yeah it will work (if the keyboard and mouse are PS2 or USB, the older 5pin DIN can be converted, thought TBH it's not usually worth it).

Note : the keyboard and mouse are worthless. The cost practically nothing so they may be worth upgrading.
The monitor is worth keeping only if it 17 inch+ and less than 3 years old, otherwise it will only hurt your eyes and should be junked.
A new 17 inch is about €150 (for a very good one) and a 17 TFT (flat panel) about €350 (this will have a slightly bigger picture than the normal monitor and is easier on the eyes).

Dell are the best PC manufacturer available. I wouldnt buy a pc from a shop except for the Aldi or Lidl PC's which are usually great value for money.

    Dell suck imo.
buy parts from komplett.ie , pretty cheap (may cost 150 more than a dell), fun to make, and will kick the ass off any dell machine out there.

amd are nice and cheap, something like an AMD Sempron 3100+ 1.8 GHz would be a good start, or a 3.6 ghz Pentium 4 if you want to fork out (personally id go for amd)
abit, msi, and asus make good mother boards. (get gigabit ethernet; and onboard sound if you dont want a gaming machine)
A nice phat Hard Disk, 250 Gigs or somewhat (i reckon maxtor are safe), a gig of memory and like tribble says, get a nice 17 inch tft. You will want a dvd player/writer (msi for 60 yoyo's ), a logitech mx mouse and keyboard) (wireless preferbly)
then there is other stuff like graphics cards and sound cards, if you want to go gaming, either get an ati 9800 or better or a nvidia(if you go for nvidia best get a new one like 6800, cause some of the older ones kinda suck), personally id go for nvidia , only prob is they tend to be expensive.
For sound get something like an audogy or sound blaster live, on the other hand if you dont want a gaming machine, dont bother with a gfx card or a sound card, and there you go 250 + yoyo's saved.
    sorted
when buying a main board , cpu and memory, the thing to look out for is to ensure the fsb of the mainboard corresponds to the bus speed reqired for this chip, so for a p4 it might be socket 370 at 833 fsb , the chip will also say this, same goes for memory, so the mem may run at 333mhz for example, the board must support this too, but apart from that simple.

Komplett offer a PC building service now.... a better choice than building one yourself, if you don't know what you are doing. :D

The only problems with Dell is their non-atx motherboards and their winmodems (but there are linux drivers available for the modems they put in), other than that I think alot of this stuff about them is utter bullhorn.

However, the new komplett service looks very interesting for people who don't have the skills to put a pc together, but want a customised pc at a cheaper price. http://komplett.ie/k/cl.asp?bn=10310

As for soundcards, the audigy 1 cards are going quite cheap now as most people are buying the 2 series. They are excellent cards and you could probably pick an average one up for about 70 euro...

Gfx - depends on what you want the pc for, judging by your posts neev I guess you don't use your pc too much and as such you shouldn't really worry about this sort of thing :) .

    g'luck,
    Fobia.

Keyboards are cheap - but in many cases are a personal preference, some of the older heavy clicky ones are liked by some people and hated by others, if you have to buy one check the size of the space bar - sometimes to get more keys in they make the space bar too small. IMHO

as a quick check on the uptodateness of the keyboard does it have a windows key ?

The monitor should have a brand / name / model number on it.
google for those words and "specifications" to see if it is listed
It must be able to run at 75Hz or better. Unless it is a really old monitor with a slow phosphor - but that's unlikely
