I know some committe members. (Not one myself :)). When did you email them? Try it again.

I'll poke Larry next time I see him.

[edit]Larry has been poked, try emailing help at netsoc diespamdie dot ucd dot ie[/edit]

I'm a member but TBH they treat ordinary members like children.

The "shell account", if you can call it that, is so restricted you can't even chmod your own files! (results in a chmod.core being thrown up).

DIT netsoc trusted it's users and had proper Solaris shell accounts. None of your default shell script GUI crap.

Last year the shell accounts were for idiots. rbash = restricted bash. Horrible to use.

This year the shell is quite a big/lot better. Perhaps that was the plan, give them crap accounts then they won't complain as much when we give them a not so bad shell.

I tried to chmod a file and it worked fine. Perhaps it cause I'm doing the trainee programme and so my account was upgraded a bit.

I'm not complaining too much, the 1GB is nice and I use their server to mirror backup my sites.

I joined them about a month ago to take part in the tetris thingy. Just emailed the address Syth gave above and had an answer from D.C. within 2 hours. I had to drop a fiver into box 26 (I think!) and send an email with some details. I had my account sorted within 24 hours though :)

    1 GB? It's now 2 GB. :)

Plus if you don't know you can now access you're website from http://<your name>.netsoc.com, ie you can get mine at http://rory.netsoc.com. Small feature that I think is cool/.

Thanks for poking people Syth, still nothing from the help addy, ah well will wait some more.

Didn't realise it was 2GB, that's great. I'm not too bothered about the shell access, I'm really after some decent webspace with PHP and SQL support.

I've also heard that from inside ucd, there are more open ports on the netsoc proxy machines... any truth in that?

*sigh* many emails, no joy. I've sourced a Trinity matrix account in this time and I'm a UCD student.. ah well, does the job, no 5 euro for netsoc.

Ha, ha - you should ask vinks over at the trinners board.
He used to have a "hand" in the DIT Netsoc ;)
(before some Aungier St. muppets decided to raid Kevin St. for the Dell and SGI boxen... now DIT Netsoc is a joke)

I'm a Netsoc sysadmin and I stumbled across this thread at random. If people have issues the first place for help is our website: http://www.netsoc.ucd.ie/

We have reasonably good documentation there.
Asking for help on boards.ie is not going to work since I don't have time to read this stuff and I doubt any other admins do either. Email us at one of our listed email addresses or even post on our forum and you should get a response pretty quickly.

To clarify some misinformation I saw in this thread once and for all:
    • We offer 2GB of space, backed up every 30 minutes.
    • We give PHP/MySQL/PostgreSQL on request.
    • Every user automatically gets the vanity domain http://username.netsoc.com, http://username.ucdbum.com and http://username.kablooie.net
    • We will host user domains on request.
    • Our shell accounts are only restricted because computer services make us restrict them! I agree this sucks. Becoming a trainee sysadmin or otherwise getting involved with the society puts you in a position where you can earn our trust and hence we'll quite probably give you a full shell account.
    • This year we have spent a lot of time improving our restricted shells and most things should work. If they don't, we specifically ask users both when they log in and on the website to report problems they encounter. How can we fix things if nobody tells us they are broken?
    • We do not and will not offer a way to bypass the UCD firewall because turning a blind eye to misuse of our web proxy got us in a LOT of trouble due to copyright violations. If we did not lock down p2p activity, we would be kicked out of the server centre.

And as for people who have sent us support requests, we have now answered all we received. People were busy over Christmas, during term time we can usually sort stuff out within 24 hours.

If you feel you can improve the society, I encourage you to get involved and help. We are very short on manpower.

Cheers for the reply, but no need to get defensive, nobody here was complaining.

The netsoc website is all well and good, but most of the addresses listed either bounce or are simply not replied from.
That's why people resort to boards.

    Cheers,

    Invader.

    PS - Netsoc mostly rules.

The only reason this thread was started is that I have yet to get a reply from anyone at the addresses listed on the netsoc site or indeed in this thread. First email sent over a month ago, another sent to secretary@netsoc.ucd.ie 3 days ago following replies to this thread.

It's purpose is not to complain but to contact some members.
If you feel you can improve the society, I encourage you to get involved and help. We are very short on manpower.

LOL - And here I am jumping up and down with cash in hand trying to join for over a month now!

Would you be able to set me up an account? Thanky.
