NEW TIMETABLE BOOSTS SERVICES ON KEY ROUTES

Extra trains for Galway, Athlone, Killarney and Carlow amongst changes

Improvements for Drogheda, Rosslare, Ennis and Waterford/Limerick Junction

Iarnród Éireann’s new timetable for InterCity, DART and Commuter services will take effect from 12 December 2004, and promises improvements on a number of key routes. Details have also been confirmed of further improvements in the first quarter of 2005, as the benefits of Government and EU supported investment continue to be delivered to rail customers.

Following major capacity and frequency changes in last year’s December 2003 timetable, resulting from the introduction into service of 80 new commuter railcars, this year’s improvements are achieved without the benefit of additional fleet, but through maximising the usage of existing fleet. The timetable sets the scene for 12 months time, when 67 new InterCity carriages will have entered service, and moves towards an hourly service on the Dublin-Cork route, and other frequency improvements will be under way.

    CHANGES FROM 12 DECEMBER 2004

Customers on all routes should note that there may be changes in departure times, with some departure times brought forward. Customers should ensure they have checked the timetable online or at stations before travelling. Major changes are:

    Northern Commuter route:

A new service will operate at 17.10hrs from Connolly to Balbriggan, serving Skerries and Balbriggan. This will relieve pressure on the 17.13hrs Pearse to Dundalk train, one of the busiest trains on the commuter network.

A new late evening train will operate at 23.20hrs from Pearse to Drogheda, serving all regular commuter stops.

Additional stops on services at Malahide and Portmarnock will fill some current gaps in the timetable.

    DART

    Improved off-peak service – services every 15 minutes from 10.00hrs to 15.00hrs.

    Dublin-Rosslare

Journey time savings on services, up to 13 minutes, following track renewal. In addition, the evening service departure time from Rosslare has been changed to 18.55hrs, allowing incoming ferry passengers to travel onwards by rail.

    Dublin-Carlow

An extra service each way in the evening between Dublin and Carlow, departing Heuston at 19.45hrs and departing Carlow at 21.17hrs.

    Waterford-Dublin

Journey time savings are being delivered on some key Waterford-Dublin services, including a ten-minute journey time saving on the 07.30hrs Waterford-Dublin, which will now complete the journey in 2 hours 25 minutes.

    Ennis-Limerick

Following last year’s enhanced timetable between Ennis and Limerick, which has seen major growth in demand in the last 12 months, the new timetable will see journey time reduced from 45 minutes to 40 minutes, with further improvements planned in the future.

    Waterford to Limerick Junction:

The timetable between Waterford and Limerick Junction, expanded to three services each way per day since October, will be changed to give better connections at Limerick Junction into services to and from Dublin.

    FURTHER CHANGES EARLY 2005

Further improvements are also detailed in the new timetable, taking effect during the first quarter of 2005. These are:

    Extra trains Heuston-Galway and Athlone-Galway, from 10 Jan 2005:

A new service from Athlone to Galway, serving all stations to Galway, will commence from 10 January, at 07.05hrs from Athlone. An extra InterCity service will operate from Galway to Dublin at 09.35hrs.

In the evening, the 17.55hrs Heuston to Athlone service will be extended to Galway, providing an extra InterCity service – there will now be seven trains each way per day between Heuston and Galway. Finally, a new 21.10hrs service from Galway to Athlone will operate each evening.

Extra services to and from Killarney, from 28 March 2005

Two extra services each way per day will operate between Killarney and Cork, also offering new connections to Dublin at Mallow.

An 06.30hrs Killarney to Cork service service will run non-stop to Mallow where it will connect with the morning train from Cork to Dublin, giving an arrival time of 09.33hrs at Heuston. New services will operate at 09.10hrs Cork to Killarney and 11.15hrs Killarney to Cork serving all stops en route, with a new 18.45hrs Cork to Killarney providing a connection from the 17.00hrs Heuston to Cork train, running non-stop to Killarney.

This increases the number of services to and from Killarney each day to seven.

A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann said “these timetable improvements are the latest phase in our plans to expand frequency on InterCity routes, and maximise capacity on our Commuter services. Further improvements are in the pipeline in 12 months time, when 67 new InterCity carriages, 36 new Commuter carriages and the completion of the DART Upgrade will ensure more additional services and higher capacity across many of our routes.”

The new timetables are available online now at the journey planner on www.irishrail.ie . Timetable booklets will be available in rail stations shortly.
