I guess it's the weather again:

"Devotees of our Madagascan Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract will be saddened to learn that the reason for the considerable price increase is as a direct result of crop failure. Way back in April 2000, the vanilla-growing regions were devastated by Cyclone Huddah [I think they mean Hudah], which destroyed the crops and the harvested beans awaiting shipment. Three years on, and the effects of this natural disaster are still being felt... 2003 proved to be a very poor flowering year, with just 20% of the orchids blossoming. This has further tightened the supply of vanilla beans, thus driving the price up substantially."

Madagascar produces about two-thirds of the world's vanilla beans. It's the country's primary export. And Indonesia, the world's other major vanilla producer, is still getting over El Nino (1998-99). On the other side of the equation, just one country accounts for a staggering two-thirds of the world's vanilla consumption. Yep, the US.

The cyclone also killed about 20 people and left around 100,000 homeless.

I thought there was a crash in the vanilla market and the price went down loads earlier this year.
BTW most vanilla flavoured stuff doesn't use real vanilla. Vanilla's more expensive than cocaine, so it might be cheaper to add coke to your coke.

Yeah, but that was before they knew it was bad for you. It used to be in over the counter medicines back then.
