Anyone know any U.S. sites doing good deals on laptops right now? Its very tempting with the way the dollar is at the moment!

yeah ive the same idea. not looking for cheap deals in particular but just trusted sites. shipping's the killer, it cancels out what you'd save on the dollar, unless of course youve family in the us which i do :)

the acer ferrari 3400 is what ive my eyes on, flashy but a good all rounder. http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/fr3400.htm about $2300, (roughly €1800). to buy it here would be about €2300!!

Dont forget customs is cracking down on personal imports from the states - so if you get it posted to you or bring it through dublin airport you may get caught and clobbered.

There are ways to avoid this though....

I have a friend living over there so they can send me it as a nice Xmas gift ;)

I was just looking at newegg.com,

    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=34-115-153&DEPA=3

    Acer Notebook TM2301LC Celeron M 1.3G, 15" XGA TFT, 256MB, 30GB, DVD/CD-RW,LAN, WinXP Home

    works out at
516.332 EUR + shipping and tax maybe?

Just curious - are there actually any confirmed cases of people getting caught coming through customs at Dublin airport? I firmly believe they are looking for the likes of shoppers with 5 and 6 large suitcases full of clothes with the tags still on.

I really, really don't think they are on the lookout for a lone laptop user. I was in the US for an extended stay and myself and the better half came laden with a laptop each (though one was my work laptop) and about 10 bags/suitcases. There wasn't even any customs there. This was mid-October, and I know they are now supposed to be cracking down, but has anyone actually heard of anyone getting stopped?

I was in Boston a few weeks ago and bought a of clothes and stuff .. when arrived back in the airport the customs people were just standing around talking to each other.

Some of the people's bags came off within 10 minutes (Miracle :)) went through customs without anybody being there at all - as I looked over and checked when we got in to the baggage hall.

I think they are looking for the people with 10 bags and are obviously bringing loads of stuff back.

I wore some of the new clothes Home including my brand new leather jacket !!! :)

I would guess that they will be more strict now between Thanksgiving and Christmas ...

A guy I work with just came back today with his new laptop, and some memory cards for me. You aren't going to have a problem bringing back a single laptop (I'd leave the box in the US however). I go through Dublin airport frequently enough, and I've never seen anyone stopped in the 'green' channel; people on intra-EU flights often walk through it also, it's right beside the 'blue'.
