Recently i just bought a new pc. Have installed xp, drivers etc. But when i go to play any games the computer freezes. When it freezes no commands work such as ctrl, alt and delete. So all i can do is turn the computer off. My gfx card is a radeon 9200 and was wondering is there anyway of fixing this problem and has it happened to anyone else?

does it freeze with an annoying EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE sort of thing

as my old old pc use to do that..completely random it could do it in a game or just browsing..but hardly ever did it in UT2003

    screen freeze..nothing happens very annoying

i never did sort out the problem, i thought it was a heat issue as i took the side panel off and slapped a desktop fan right inside..hardly did it after then...still sometimes tho...till i got a new psu and mobo..so its hard to tell u which was the problem

maybe just heat....but since uve just bought it...hmm

have you got the latest xp service pack?? If its happening for a specific game you might find some info in the support docs or online. sometimes it can very hard to track down the problem. :(

Could be anything. I had the same problem, and it turned out that my CPU was faulty (it was a process of elimination). Strip out everything from the machine (graphics, add in boards, eg sound, network). If you've multiple ram chips, try them one at a time. Basically, get a barebones system working. If you can't, and you've tried an OS reinstall, you probably have a hardware fault.

When I was trying to debug my freezing problem (symptoms were the same) my problem was that it was random. So, I could strip it down to a barebones, and it might work for a day, but the next day it might just work for 2 mins. See if you can find an activity that DEFINITELY crashes it. If, as you say, it's games that are doing it though, it's likely that it's a CPU overheat. In my case, I found that keeping a netcard in it, and transferring a couple of hundred megs over to it would always crash it, allowing me to swap around hardware combinations. Luckily, I had a spare machine in work that had similar parts for me to swap in and out.

    I'd try update drivers first.
After that try swapping graphics card if possible.

Yeah yeah Biatch! I had the same problem only recently, whenever i would try play something like Doom 3 or Half Life 2 my laptop would just completely freeze, which made me wanna throw it out the window!

However!! =) After downloading the latest Catalyst Drivers from ATI all was well :) games work fine!
