It's the 1st of December!... which means only 11 more days until the release of the most powerful handheld gaming device ever!

Having said that, the launch line-up doesn't seem all that great and the reported battery life further hinders its appeal..

Anyway, mine's pre-ordered and hopefully on it's way from lik-sang in 11days, along with Ridge Racers.

    Have you ordered yours?

I'm extremely sceptical about the PSP especially the reported battery life which is a disgrace if its true. I'd rather get a DS first. Haven't ordered one of those yet due to being broke so I won't be getting a ordering a PSP anytime soon. I'll wait for the reviews and first impressions first.

Play.com have had a PSP section for about a month, and no DS section ffs.
Bloody Sony and the mindless masses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,258 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

The DS seems more interesting to me than the PSP. Plus the reported battery life problems are making the DS look stronger.
I will be interested in reading reviews of it and its games when it gets its release.

Anyone know how much the PSP is going to be? Lik-Sang just have 0 in as the price. Also if I buy one from Japan I assume there'll be an option to change the default language to English yeah?

/Apologies for the stupid questions :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭[nicK]

    i have mine pre-ordered for about 2months...
although i'm beginning to wish i ordered from a different site after seeing the mess lik-sang made with the nintendo ds release..

anyway, if i do manage to get my hands on one, i'll be buying 1gig of memory straight away and putting that iphoto i've wanted on hold..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭[nicK]

..still eagerly awaiting that email from Lik-Sang for instructions and conformation of my unit. should arrive in my inbox any hour now...
    anyone get theirs yet?

btw lik-sang are just after uploading a nice 'open and exposed' picture gallery of the psp here.

for those concerned about batterly life, from the below extract from ign, it looks as though we'll be getting over 3hours anyway..

"Since starting up, we've used the system in a number of ways. We've played lengthy sessions of Vampire Chronicle, Lumines and Ridge Racers. We even played Ridge Racers in WiFi mode with three players for a couple of races. We've tried out UMD movies and music, Memory Stick movies and images and transferring data to and from a PC via USB. The battery eventually gave out, after over three hours of use (the last thirty minutes was our playing MP3s as we wrote this story).

Remember, this quick battery test was just on the residual charge that was left in the system from Sony's manufacturing plants -- nowhere near a full charge."

    read more here.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 2,432 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peteee

    yeah saw that

If it can keep (over 3 hours is what it says, probably 3 hrs 10 mins :D 3 hours on a residual charge, while playing a wifi game for some time, well i think thats pretty ok.

Of course the battery could have been fully charged, although ive never seen this in any other device (camcorder, digital bettery and mobiles come to mind)

    Will await further reviews anyway

As for getting one i'll be picking one up when it comes out over here, with a 1 gig memory stick :)

well its going to be a rip-off,if your "lucky" enough to get 1 before christmas on import.$600 lik-sang think for the value pack alone, add delivery and custom charges+a game(s) and its  .
still thinking of getting 1 tho :p,
just waiting for yhat email.....

I believe this thing is going to be very hindered by its limited battery life.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

I'm interested to hear what people make of the PSP once it's released, though I certainly wouldn't get one without reading lots of reviews and playtests.

Got my DS last week for $169, so $600 for PSP is seeming pretty crazy, even for all the extra stuff it can do!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

600 yoyos is absolutely ridiculous. God damn christmas profiteering.

Just came across the PSP on amazon: they're lookin' £179 stg for it when it comes out in march, so that's about €300 or so right? Anyone talking about a 1gb stcik for it can add another £130+.

Games seem to be lacking for it yet, but the new WipEout is a PSP-only title so if anything makes me buy it it'll be that...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

Play asia are selling them for €400 in total thats about €580 for value Pack + RR game + Custom charges, but that price will drop once demand is met.

Looks like there are alot of people having problems with their PSP. Taken from the GA forums:

hmm, i doubt the validity of those claims.. - when i hear it from a reputable website i'll believe it...

on a brighter note.. the battery life may not be such a big issue after all. Ridge Racers apparently runs for 6hours on medium settings (5hrs for high) .. i'll try and find that link now...

    Some PSP stuff on IGN

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭[nicK]

well, i finally got the much awaited email: ($529 excluding delivery and game, totally taking advantage)

    Dear nic n,

Please ignore this email if you decide to wait for the PSP price to drop down, or reply immediately if you want us to process your order still before Christmas.

The first deliveries of Sony PSP Value Packs are now getting in and will soon be ready to ship. Because of the shortage and other circumstances described in our recent PSP updates and emails, the price is unfortunately hiked and will stay like this until early next year. At this point of time you have three options:

Option #1: Get your PSP shipped as soon as possible

    - Only "Value Packs" for $529 (EUR 398/GBP 275) can be shipped currently

    - Only Ridge Racers or Vampire Chronicle can be shipped ($59.90)

    - Please confirm which game you want us to ship, or if you want both of them

    - Other games will soon be ready seperately (Free Shipping Worldwide)

    - Due to the shortage, the PSP price will NOT drop before next year

    - Only insured UPS shipping is available ($30-$40 depending on location)

    - Credit Card or Telegraphic Transfer (T/T) to HK only (payment in US$)

    - Other items in your order will be separated & process within 5 to 14 days

Please reply to this email and tell us that you want us to ship your system. We will set everything up for you and keep you informed about the status.

Please keep your confirmation email as short as possible and confirm without asking questions that are already answered in this email or in the PSP Update on our web site. This helps Lik Sang a great deal in providing fast servicing of answers and rush processing or the orders.

Important: There are tight deadlines and only the fastest ones can make it to the first shipments.

    Sony PSP Value Pack Content:

    - PSP Hardware (PSP-1000K Value Pack)

    - PSP Memory Stick Duo 32MB

    - PSP Headphones With Remote Control

    - PSP Soft Case & Hand Strap

    - PSP AC Adapter (100V-240V, 50/60Hz, works worldwide)

    - PSP Battery Pack

    - Free Travel Plug (to fit in your country)

Option #2: Keep your position & wait for the price to normalize

    - Due to the shortage, the price will NOT drop before next year

    - There is no guarantee when Sony will make more units available

    - If you decide to wait, you will not loose your position

    - Other payment and shipping options will be available next year

If you choose to wait for cheaper stock to arrive, there is no need to reply to the email, as ignoring the first launch offer still lets you keep your spot in the reservation list. If you decide to ask questions, we will reply to them once the initial mass shipment has left our warehouse and all first-release orders have been dealt with.

Please understand that this is the only way to get thousands of PSP systems shipped in time.

    Option #3: Cancel your order

    - Even you cannot accept Option #1, it is not recommended to cancel

    - The market will clear early next year, no new orders until then

    - You can secure your pre-order position and continue monitoring

    - Cancellations can be done automatically in your My Account

    - We will never ever ship your order without your permission

i'll be waiting for more shipments and the price to drop (the first units have a few bugs anyway)
.. although even at $529, you could still make a profit on it the way they're selling on ebay atm..

Because of the shortage and other circumstances described in our recent PSP updates and emails, the price is unfortunately hiked

I'm sure there is a very good reason for this. Obviously the price of all the helper monkeys needed to handle the PSPs in a specialised manner must be added on to the cost. These requirements will not be needed after demand is met because Frank Sinatra told us so. Also several tonnes of gold and platinum will have to be ordered so that we can fashion weights out of them and weigh each PSP individually. Obviously this requirement will not be needed after the Christmas rush because Santa Claus, the thieving bastid, will have snatched it all as well as any remaining PSP units for kids in orphanages.

Somebody call the Hong Kong equivalent of the Ombudsman.

    €400 plus shipping....

methinks waiting is looking like a more viable option..

right theres an article on psp battery life

Not bad tbh, although obviously could be better

i'm just wondering.. is it just lik-sang that are ripping us off or are the other online pre-order sites doing it too?

if we had of ordered from say, play-asia.com, could we be paying retail price and possibly be playing with the psp right now?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

All the ones that I've heard about are rip off merchants.

how much is psp in shops, didnt they say it was going to be around the price of DS a while back !?
    400$ the fock...

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It is supposed to be around the same price as the DS. However with Sony purposelly (sp?) only making a ridiculously small amount of units to make sure they sell out and cos mass hysteria there is rampant profiteering. Expect the same shenanigans for the American and European release.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Eurogamer has some bad reports about it. Second Hand reports admittedly. Supposedly the PSP only last 90mins with Ridge Racer.

I'm sure I read somewhere that they got 4hrs of Ridge Racer on one charge.

    EDIT:http://tokyopia.com/tk/forum/index.php?showtopic=1628&st=15

    The Setup:

The PSP reports 51% battery charge out of the box. The unit is used
(to play assorted games and videos) until it shuts down due to low
battery. It is then recharged to 100%.

Ridge Racers is inserted, and the AC Adaptor is unplugged. The PSP is
powered on and as the Ridge Racers logo appears, the clock is
started. The game is played continuously, with minimal time spent in
any menus and absolutely no replays watched.

The PSP is set to 75% max volume and brightness 3 (the highest
    possible when using the battery).

    Results:

    At 3:45 - 3:48 (that's three hours and forty-five minutes) the POWER
light begins flashing slowly. Note that the light stays green, it
doesn't change color a la Nintendo's handhelds when the battery is
    low--it flashes instead.

At 4:03:30, just over four hours, the game is interrupted by a
flashing low battery indicator, and the unit powers down.

So there you have it. Almost 4 hours exactly with max brightness and
more than adequate volume (especially if using headphones, which I
was not). Invest in a spare battery pack, and you've got no less than
8 hours of gaming (unless you're using the wireless adaptor, I
    suppose).

Battery life is almost exactly what Sony said, nothing more nothing less. IGN have a detailed report on it and Gamesradar say it too. About 4 - 6 hours of gameplay, depending on how intense the game is. And thats with full brightness and sound, no wi-fi though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,336 ✭✭✭Bluehair

Well thats me decided then. I didn't think I'd be excited about this given all the bad press about battery life etc but I'm heading to Hong Kong at the end of January anyway so will def pick one up.

Watching the videos on ign sold me on it anyway... still drooling at Ridge Racer... :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

Yes-asia are selling the PSP value pack at a decent price. They were going for $300 this morning, but there out of stock now.

    Indeed

I'm sure they'll have enough made by the time the us and european launches come around.
