Well the title says it all really.

Will your office, employer etc put on a xmas party for you and the other staff this year or do you have to fork out the readies for it? Also do you usually get an xmas bonus. Would you be annoyed if you didnt get a party or a bonus. Is it the norm in irish business to treat their staff this way??

Personnaly I wont get either but i am used to that as i work in the civil service and it has never been the case to get a free party or a bonus in my experience.

God I feel like I have ALWAYS worked somewhere where:
    • The year I join is the first year they have decided not to give a Christmas Bonus.
    • The year I join is the year where the £200 bonus turns into a £20 HMV voucher.
    • The year I join is the year they don't make targets so no bonus.
    • The year I decide to work for company A instead of company B, is the year company B give £2,000 and a holiday France to all workers at Christmas.
    • The year I leave is the year they make their targets so everybody gets a bonus.

In my last job, we did very well @ Xmas.

We got €300 bonus, plus xmas party free, and it wasnt one of these crappy bigs affairs, but a really nice meal in a nice restaurant, none of us had to put a hand in our pockets before, during or after the meal.

I am now in a new company, and its the companies 1st xmas in Cork, so we dont know about the bonus. There is an xmas party in Jurys, Ballsbridge, where all is free, they are putting us up in Jurys.

Unfortunatley I cant go, but what can you do.

Where I work there is a general staff party, which is usually held somewhere pretty crappy, with a rubbish DJ and some finger food and I'm pretty much expected to go to it as part of my job...

There is also a kids party on in the daytime for staff with children, which has a balloon magician of some sort this year.

And there is also a meal for members of management and some of the more active members of the board. There isn't any christmas bonus... so I really just try to drink as much as possible to get my moneys worth out of the meal...

I'm not big on christmas office meals though... as it has to be a really bland boring restaurant that will suit everyone... they're always rubbish at catering for vegetarians and usually only stock horrible Californian wine...

I hope you don't mention this in interviews. ;)

This is my first year working for my present company, but I don't believe Christmas bonuses are the done thing in this part of the world. We're being brang rollerskating (the ice-rink was full, apparently, boo, his, etc.) next week with boozing afterwards, but I don't know who pays yet.

You know, sir, accidents decreased by exactly the number that Simpson himself is known or suspected to have caused last month. And our output level is just as high as during Simpson's last vacation.

Last year, staff report no bonuses, and since my paypacket today was no fatter, I assume it's the same this year.

Don't have to pay for the Christmas party, and I'll receive €500 for passing 4 MS exams in the new year, so t'aint all bad.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

As far as the Xmas party goes, we are getting a free meal and some (3  ) drinks.

I work for a big company, so the whole comapny will be there I suppose.

As far as a bonus goes, nada.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,001 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Last year, there was an Xmas party + 4 free drinks. I didn't bother attending. Targets were met, so bonuses were handed out.

THIS year, targets haven't been met. No bonus. No Xmas party by the sound of it. Quarterly results are being announced this evening so, for all I know, there might be a P45 for Xmas. I'll know in an hour or so. Hurrah...

My company are having a christmas party which is free (dinner and 4 or 5 drinks). No partners allowed only workers. Plus theyÄre having it in the middle of nowhere again so looks like i'll be driving.

As for the bonus nothing from the company but I do get the 14th months pay from the government (13th comes before summer holidays). Everyone also got a one-week bonus from the company in September. Guess I can't complain too much!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,707 ✭✭✭skywalker

i remember working in a large company a few years back, where everyone was given 3 "drinks tokens" youd presume they'd get ya a free drink wouldnt ya? nope 3 1/2 price drinks ladies and gents. and that was your bonus.

in the company im in now, we get a nice night out with free meal/booze. no crimbo bonus though. however the pay packet is pretty fat from other bonuses so im not complaining :D

We get a Xmas party in a posh hotel in town. Meal, and a few complimentary drinks. Not too many though.

As for a bonus, it's not the same company-wide, but mine would be performance related.. which is just an excuse to keep it low

I seem to recall getting a Christmas card signed by the MD (actually signed), and a couple of bottles of wine from O'Briens too.. It's a nice touch. Oh and that's for everyone btw, not just me!

well, i get to fly to Denmark to attend my christmas party, and there are wild rumours that there will be a bonus. although i have no idea how much that would be worth.

which would be really cool, coz the last christmas party i went to i organised, and i got stung for that, and the only time i was ever going to get a bonus, i was told i had been out 1 day to many sick when i worked for IBM, and therefore wasnt eligable for my bonus.

I'm another civil servant- so no Christmas party or bonuses here either. We are going out to lunch though (and are expected to both attend and to pay for it in advance- those who don't want to go are being grilled as to why).

Are Christmas bonuses the norm? If so- how much? E.g. those on income support get an extra weeks assistance at Christmas- does something similar exist in the real world (apart from the civil service and a few other areas).

    Hmmm.......

I work for one of the large multinationals, so they are usually good around this time of the year.

I'm getting just under a month's salary as a bonus.

We get 2 x-mas parties as well. free food and booze at both!!! happy days :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 492 ✭✭climaxer

I'm very lucky too - we get lunch and all drinks paid for plus a very generous bonus of two weeks pay - I'm here 7.5 years and I get a rise most years so the bonus gets bigger each year too :). I also get some presents from the regular clients like bottles of whiskey, wine and chocolates :D

Two Christmas Parties: One company-wide which is in the Stillorgan Park Hotel on a Saturday night (probably to discourage as many as possible from attending). Assume there'll be a few bottles of wine but no confirmation of either that or any other type of beverage. Second one is a department night out which will be in a bar on Leeson Street, finger-food and function room type affair, we're being asked to kick in the fiver or so each it'll cost for the finger food and I'll be surprised if the boss even gets a round in.

Bonus? /me rolls around laughing, tears streaming out of my eyes.
I'll be lucky to get my wages on time.

Free night's food and drink in a posh Dublin seafood restaurant to which spouses/partners/tramp you drag in off the street are welcome at. Bonus of a month's wages too, at least that was it the last three years, nothing's been said yet so we're all hopeful.

What really grieves me on this is that I used to get bonuses in nearly every part-time job I had during college where tbh I was a dossing b<|stard but now that I actively contribute towards the bottom line, I don't see a cent... :(

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,001 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Ohhh we just found out about our Christmas goodies:

    * We get a BIG lump sum of money that's dependent on certain factors like our time with the company
    * Even better, after January the 31st, most of us never even have to come into work again!

Yep, I've just been laid off. Merry ****ing Christmas.

My sympathies ixoy- sounds like classic corporate behaviour- announce redundancies coming up to Christmas and it gets lost in the static. Hope you find a new job soon. Make the most of your last time with them- keep the redundancy laws in mind- they are obliged to give you time off for interviews etc. as they are making you redundant.

We're getting our bonus' in February but I think it's 5 or 7% of our wages - woo hoo!
Main company do is in the Shelbourne, free booze and food all night. Pity it's black tie.
Team leader is bringing us out for drinks and dinner, and our manager is too, and some of our suppliers have invited us to their crimbo parties, free booze at them too.

It's gonna be a long month!

Don't know about the official Christmas party yet but the rumours going around is that it is going to be pretty special.. Department night out is next week and we gotta pay a €10 deposit and then the night after their is a completely free on the night after courtest of the mege global IT company ;)

No Chrimbo party from my new company, but I get a bonus every three months worth about 5 weeks wages, so about 20 weeks wages bonus per annum, if I keep myself billable

Easily makes up for the fact that I have to pay for my Christmas party :o

Civil servant here so no bonus but our party is allegedly subsidised. Maybe Mr. Cowen can sort us out in the budget later today since FF have turned themselves into The Socialist Santa Party over the last few weeks!

    Having two work parties!
We went to vicar street last week (all paid for!) had to buy our own drinks though!Going out to a posh restaurant for a meal then closer to christmas (presume we'll get meal and a free rounds of drinks!) Can't wait!

As for the bonus - I've yet to find out Doubt it! ** strolls casually to consult/confront boss ** :D

In my last job our Chrimbo party consisted of a meal in the afternoon and then to the pub across the road for a night of free drink. Our bonus was normally a weeks wages which was always sweet, but I'm jealous reading about 4 & 5 weeks wages

I started in my new job about a month ago, so I'm not sure about a bonus, but I was told that we're being brought to a pub in Rathmines for a free drinks night ... I'm hoping for the bonus ... plus the better half is only in her new job about 4 months, so she'll probably get no bonus either :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,007 ✭✭✭pretty-in-pink

Our dinner is paid for, band dj etc, not working long enough for a bonus- but its bout 2-4weeks wages. Buy our own drink, free booze for us would cost 1000 ish, so its WAY cheaper for them tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭Furp

I work for a large multinational.

No Bonus at all any time of year.

Our christmas party is in January and is payed for and includes a partner in a nive hotel but we give a €15 donation per person to go to charity, which was introduced to stop people saying they would go and not turning up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,683 ✭✭✭daveg

I too work for a multinational. We have a company social (this sat night). Costs E10 per employee/partner. Formal party with dinner and *a* free drink. We also have an office party but as I don't really belong to any department I don't usually go. We also get a bonus (5-7%) after Xmas *depending on the companies performance*. We deserve it this year as we taken on 30% more work but have the same/less people.

Yearly increase will be given after Xmas also. Adverage is about 3.5%.

I was complaining before I read this thread.
