How do I shrink an object in Illustrator by an exact percentage e.g shrink a Logo by 50% ?

(okay, i know its not Photoshop but photoshop and illustrator are first cousins!)

select the object or objects you wish to resize and go to

    Object >> Transform >> Scale

There you can type in a percentage value to reduce/enlarge the selected object(s).

In photoshop, is there any way of using a different photograph, or whatever, as a layer mask. All I can think of doing is making a pattern of the photograph and filling the layer mask with it. Any better methods?
