Bathroom Tap issues

Bathroom Tap (hot water) is sticking and dripping.

When I turn the tap on nothing happens for a few rotations and then there is a bang/knock and water starts to flow. Tap also drips and oddly when the shower is turned off it will also start to drip.

Anyhow, I've got new washer to stop the dripping and hopefully this will resolve the sticking too if I can free it up when the valve is out.

Which brings me onto my current problem. How do I get the valve out. Does this shroud come off first (if so, how) or do I need to loosen the valve via top access through the shroud.

I've tried unscrewing it, tapping it to break any scale making it stick, and hot water. I don't want to apply too much pressure a make a mess.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks.

Hi - I'm guessing that yes, it needs to come off. It's probably stuck with limescale. Try pour a load of vinegar (actual vinegar and not Mr Chipz' wishy-washy chip dampener) into the hood and let it sit for a few hours. Then give it a quick blast of WD40 and try remove it using a mole-grips with rubber/soft plastic or an old cotton sock on it (clean off the WD40 from the outside first). The threads can then be cleaned up with a toothbrush and more vinegar.

Then with that out of the way (he says with confidence) you should be able to unscrew the valve and replace the washer.

Finally got it off using the method you described. Was no need to have collar so tight.

Put a slight score into the collar, but will leave it for a while.

New washer has solved the leak/drip/sticky behaviour. However, tap is a bit stiff to open or close. Presume that will ease with use.

Yes, just give it a few sharp turns and it will loosen up over time.
