Question about licence step

    Hi all,

Shopping around a bit for a nice Ruger 10/22 to get into target shooting at the moment.

I understand very well the main steps towards getting your licence: Safety course, Gun safe, join a club etc. but I have a question for ye.

Few years ago a chap I knew told me that there was a Garda interview involved somewhere in the process. Is this actually the case? I searched this forum but found no mention of it. Perhaps a call from the FO but nothing about a formal interview.

Only reason I ask is because I work a shift cycle so may need to work around this.

    Thanks,

    P

One additional question for anyone who knows. Are there any proficiency courses going on in December in the Waterford/Kilkenny/South Tipp area? Was thinking of heading up to Nenagh for one in OpenSeason but it looks like they are not running any ones in December. Thanks again.

Yes, No, Maybe - but in my experience its usually no.

Its basically down to the Super, if he/she wants to see you in person "To judge the cut of your jib" as they say, then its their choice, I would imagine most Supers are far too busy and let their staff do the leg work. In 40+ years I've never met a Super in person but our area FO's will always want to meet face to face.

I wouldn't worry about it, paper never refuses ink and there are many story's floating about.

    No interview in my experience.
What type of target shooting are you looking to get into?

I ask as the 10/22 would not be the best, depending on the type of shooting, benchrest for example.

I started with a 10/22 myself but quickly swapped to a Bolt Action Tikka T1X.

Also never had to do any course.

Lots of interviews for me 😬

Now it has always been over stuff like why do you want this gun or this ammo increase etc, but most folks haven't had to go for an interview.

On the off chance they do ask you to come in for an interview they will be reasonably flexible as to when, provided it is within their shift schedule too.

Supers almost always get a normal 9-5 but most of AGS do not.

On proficiency courses, you might give Connolly's Red Mills a buzz, they may do one.

Never forget, the end goal is zero firearms of any type.

S.I. No. 187/1972 - Firearms (Temporary Custody) Order - Firearms seized

S.I. No. 21/2008 - Firearms (Restricted Firearms and Ammunition) Order 2008 - Firearm types restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009 - Firearms banned & grandfathered

S.I. No. 420/2019 - Magazine ban, ammo storage & transport restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023 - 2023 Firearm Ban (retroactive to 8 years prior)

    Bit of everything I suppose.

Gallery stands out to me mostly, and the availability of parts for the 10/22 (as well as that cool-factor) made it an obvious choice for the first one. Wouldn't be opposed to getting into more in future though.

How did you get away without doing a course? 😊

Yeah, I kind of half assumed they'd have to call you in. Even though there's plenty of bits and pieces in place to ensure you're not a maniac, I still felt like they'd want to sus you out for themselves rather than take the doc's word for it. Thanks for the help

Ah sure look, I'll make it in if they want to see me. I'm a boring man, there should be no issue there 😊 Thanks for the help.
