First time bringing in a foreign car older than 4 years. I've just got a car VRT'd last week. It was first registered in UK in March 2015. Looking at availability, there's no appointments at the local NCT centres until February, but if I get something this month (cancellation etc), will the NCT be valid for a year, or until March? I want to get NCT ASAP, but don't want to be repeating it a couple months later.

The expiry date will be 12 months from the date of import. Regardless of when it passes.

If you keep an eye on the NCT site you will usually get a booking within a few days. I booked a test last Saturday night & got a slot for 2 days later on Monday morning. Car passed👍️

Go on the NCT website at 25 minutes before midnight and get an appointment for 3 days time.

As for the date - a UK import here, and the NCT date is the day/month of first registration in the UK.

That contradicts the above reg/nct date. It would be pointless getting the nct before January in that case. I'll ring and ask.

Edit: Looks like if its tested 91+ days early with regard to first uk registration, that will be the NCT date, best case scenario.

I've never even had to do that (or call them, either). I just use the contact form on the website and a couple of days later they come back with an appointment, and this is in a busy Dublin centre

You make the 25 to midnight sound like a last resort - it’s my first choice.

I can’t imagine what it must be like to:

Fill in a form, wait, and be told what day and time to present 😳

It’s nice to be in control, somewhat #it's the little victories that count 😁

Lots of incorrect information here. UK registration date is irrelevant. The NCT will be valid for 1 year from the date of registration in Ireland. If you wait and put it off, it only gets backdated

NCT FAQ section is fairly detailed now and covers a lot of scenarios:

21:My vehicle was imported from Northern Ireland/ Great Britain, do I need an NCT Certificate?

For Vehicles imported from Northern Ireland /Great Britain, the vehicle (once it is 4 years old) will be due for its NCT when it was first registered in Ireland. This applies to all four-year-old vehicles with an NCT due every two years and then annually for all cars that present for their 10th anniversary or subsequent NCT.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

It's only an offer of an appointment, I don't have to accept it.

You'll only ever get a subset of the available appointments on the website, no matter what time of day you look

The 25 to midnight worked for me, so all sorted. I was on the priority list anyway.

Always works for me #3 days time.

Just to clarify - I didn’t import my car, so the NCT/first reg in UK may be coincidental, or there was a reciprocal MOT/NCT thing at the time? Or the rules have changed? So, check with the NCT before presenting.

I’ve just read Buffman's post - my car was less than 4 years old when imported 🤦‍♂️
