IT Band issue

Has anyone on here ever had issues with their IT band? What were the symptoms and the remedy? I've had pain in my left knee since August when running. My doctor sent me for an MRI and the MRI came back all clear. My physio thinks the IT band is the issue and recommended a combination of strengthening exercises and foam rolling. I was making progress, gradually increasing a kilometre a week from 5k until about 12k last week. After the 12k I felt the usual pain in my knee again. A few days later I tried doing an interval session on a treadmill and my knee was throbbing afterwards. It feels like I am back at square one now. I can't understand how the MRI is showing a perfectly normal knee and I am having these issues. A friend of mine had similar issues and some kind of needle therapy sorted it, anyone else tried this? I've been running fairly consistantly since 2012 and this is the first big issue I have had…I hope there is some solution.

I had IT band tightness a good few years ago. physio diagnosed / confirmed it by pressing the tendon where it passes over the bony bit on the outside of my knee. Did a bit of laser therapy of some sort, good old manipulation and strengthening exercises while standing on a box as far as i remember. Thankfully it never really came back. I feel a little tightness every now and then and make sure to stretch the glutes as much as i can after runs when the tghtness is building. Seems to do the trick.

I went to Star Geoghan before and he pulled at my shirt and asked me where it was hurting. I said on my arm and he asked where the issue was and I said you’re pulling my shirt. IT band is the same , your glute is in knots which is pulling at your knee. Stretch your glute and it will get better. Oh and he also said to throw the foam roller in the bin.

With no disrespect to to your original physio I would suggest maybe try a different chartered physiotherapist for a fresh set of eyes on your issue -

2 different physios can have differing but valid approaches to the same issue
