Can you patch up and power wash the driveway tarmac?

    hey guys,

Just bought a new house and tarmac has seen better days 😅 Unfortunately we can't just put a new one at this stage to have it nice and bright again because we're broke 😅

What I wanted to ask was if there's a way to remove this moss/dirt with perhaps the likes of patio brush for a power washer or something? I'm not sure whether it would be worth it to clean it up and then if there's some resealer to reapply it. I could be also wasting my time and money, hence why I'm asking 🙂

Likewise, is there some good compound to fill all these little holes perhaps?

Unfortunately dealing with tarmac is definitely something I never encountered so far, so please forgive all the newbie questions.

Don't ever power wash tarmac,,by the looks of the photos yours is at the end of its life trying to brush/wash it could do more harm,, washing powder is recommended for killing moss but you still have to scrape it off, you might be able to this in some of the fresher areas.

You can get a really good radial power brush for removing the moss, but if the tar is in shite condition it won't help.

Neighbour also got theirs coated/painted a couple of years ago, and it looks fine since, but depends on how bad the driveway is I suppose..

As above you should use washing powder to get rid of the moss. Try the cheap bio stuff from Aldi or Lidl. Spread it on and leave it for a couple of weeks and most of the lighter moss should just disappear without the need for further action. The heavier or stubborn stuff would require a bit of light brushing and then put the powder down again. I can't remember the name of it but if you popped into an agri store they sell stuff that farmers use for cleaning milking parlours. That could also be used instead of the washing powder.

There are various products available for filling in small holes and cracks in the tarmac. After that you can use a brush-on sealer/restorer. Good luck with it.

Cold Macadam will be fine for lightly trafficked areas, not for general patching under tyre tracks.

Thanks so much guys for all your advice.

Yes, I have Chloras from coop 😅 25l for 20e last time I bought it.. I'll chance it and then use some stiff brush.

Yeah, I'd probably agree that this tarmac is on its last sunset, hence why I wanted to ask if I should even bother with ordering some sealants or something.

In case we would go for the new tarmac, is it only a repaving job over the existing one or am I looking at completely new job with new base etc?
