What are people's opinions on Mcguirks custom fittings?

I would normally go to a Pro for a custom fitting but unfortunately none stock the irons im looking at locally. Wilson Dynapwr forged. They are at a really good price at the moment as there releasing a new model next year. I haven't seen a bad review yet & most have said they are just as good as Tm P790s if not better!

So i booked a custom fit in mcguirks & see if the suit but also would like to see any difference with other brands. I currently game zx7s first Gen but my swing has changed since I first got them 3 years ago.

Do Mcguirks adjust lie angles if needs be etc?

I was also thinking if the wilsons dont suit at least I'd get an idea and maybe go to a Pro then but they do seem to have great fitting bays these days..

I did one in Naas/Newbridge McGuirks 3 years ago.

It's not a fitting as they don't adjust lie, shafts, length or anything like that.

You pay €50 to book the simulator for an hour.

You bring in your own 7 iron & you hit about 10 baseline shots.

Then they bring you the 7 iron of pretty much every set they have in stock, the lad puts a sticker on the face to reduce shop damage.

You'll rule out a few of the sets straight away just by looking at them, crazy offsets, chunky top lines.

So then you compare distance & dispersion against your original baseline.

If you elect to buy you get the €50 discounted off the price.

I've been fitted for a driver with McGuirks in Kinsealy. Definitely didn't have this experience.

The fitting and experience wasn't on the level of foregolf, but I left very happy

Been to a few in McGuirks for both irons and driver across a few different locations. The experience has been largely driven by the individual carrying it out, there are some seasoned veterans in there but also some that are wet behind the ears. In fairness I've had 3 driver fittings in as many years with them and every one of the fitters has told me to stick with the driver I have, so never felt any bullshittery going on.

I'd say if you are serious about golf or want a proper fitting then go to a more specialised outfit and not a retailer.

I'd echo this I think. It'll depend on who you get. There was a guy with McGuirks in Leopardstown, Robbie something, he was very good. I remember at a fairway wood fitting years ago he even went into details like tipping shaft X by 1/2 inch over shaft Y at full length etc etc. No idea if he's still with them or not and don't know much about any of the other fitters there.

My last two fittings have been with Concept Golf in Blanchardstown. A driver last year and a set of irons about 3 years ago. I found them excellent FWIW. No hard sell and plenty of brands to try.

They will definitely adjust shafts and length. Without these two things it would be completely useless.

Got fitted for a driver in McGuirks in Leopardstown and was happy with the experience and the outcome.

As others have said, it really depends on who you get doing the fitting. I had a lad in McGuirks Blanch who fitted me for a new iron set and he was brilliant. I know a fair bit about fittings through my own research and we had a great chat. I left happy and the irons have been very solid and addressed a few issues in my game (lie angle change to alleviate a left miss, shaft selection to increase spin etc) Forget his name now which I feel bad about.

That said though, I have had a poor iron fitting experience before in a different branch that that was basically, 'hit these clubs, whichever one goes the furthest you should get' so if you want a 'proper' fitting, I'd be heading to Concept Golf in Blanchardstown or Foregolf up at Kileen Castle.

@soverybored1878 Did the change the lie angle in Mcguirks on the irons? I have a fair idea about fittings at this stage myself. Someone told me if getting fit in Mcguirks that fit you now and send all your specs off to manufacturer and ring you when clubs are in. But dont know how true this is.. but their bays are quality now. I've only ever got fitted for woods there and that's handy.

I got my irons fitted by McGuirks in Kinsealy range 3 years ago now. Process was as described by others. Hit your old 7 iron a few times then go through a range of brands, heads and shafts.

Spec agreed was JPX923 HIFLI or similar which was current at the time. Shafts were 1/2 inch longer, grips a bit thicker. Can't recall what else but had to wait 3 weeks for Mizuno to make them.

I've been happy enough with them and my game is more consistent since I have them. Whether that's attributable to the fitted irons or not, I've no idea.

Guy who fitted me (Gary ?) was an ex-pro and seemed to know his stuff.

I’ve been to a good few fittings over the years in various places, some great some not so much. Some would have had you out the door in 10 mins if they could, some focused too much on distance and no attention paid to decent angle, spin, peak height etc. All of those matter as well as dispersion, left to right and front to back. I’ve had two fittings in McGuirks in Letterkenny and one in Blanchardstown. One of those 3 fittings was too focused on distance other 2 were good fittings.

Be careful not to start swinging too hard. I tend to drift into that easily enough. Try and replicate your normal swing you’d use on the course. Bring your own ball if you favour a certain ball as they may just hand you whatever is lying about.

They did. They took all the measurements and sent it off to Srixon. I got to choose the grips that were put on as well. Very happy with them.

I think it's only for new products they do that though. Like you couldn't choose previous gen irons and have them (McGuirks) adjust it. They send specs off to manufacturer and they are then custom built.

Well had fitting today. Tried P790s in a few different shafts, zxi5s few different shafts as well & the Wilson Dynapwr Forged in stiff kbs tour lite as that's all they had. I was swinging at 76 to 78 mph.. the odd 80.. but he said he can't understand how I can't get more swing speed for my age and build.. (I can't understand it either as I'd be fairly fit) anyway none of them made that much of a difference.. was missing left and right with all them and piping a few straight down the middle. So dispersion was wide..

So he didn't recommend any & just advised trying to get swing speed up to 84 mph as I'd see a difference then. Funny thing is these were all distance irons & I was hitting my zx7s same distance if not further..

So no new clubs.. but I did enjoy the fitting.

Fit means physically.. Not thinking you look fit in the mirror.😂
