    This fella hits it out of the park. He does not mince his words. A Genuine railway fan as well.

    On a personal note, I am concerned that model train shows in Ireland are becoming a " day out " rather than shows of any note.

    Still, I have a room size layout. Time is precious to me though.

    There is another angle, which I don't know how important it is for this subject.

    With sending of production to distant places, the ability to actually make technical things here is vested in a smaller percentage of the population. A lot of railway modellers had a craftsman or technical worker in their family, or were themselves capable in DIY and tech in their earlier career before retirement. The hobby was a way that such abilities worked out in private leisure activities. The general population nowadays are more consumers, working for the money to buy things that are already made and complete. Then there is amount of spare time, which I suspect is greatly reduced over the last decades for many reasons. Add in the internet and mobile phone browsing of social media which take from the time remaining, and here we are …
