"Updates", what happens when these run out?

Was thinking of buying a used phone but the updates expire in two years. New phones now seem to have 6 years of updates. My current phone was bought in 2019 Huawei and the updates cut off years ago. Is this a serious issue? Apart from some apps no longer function.

Most apps still work ok on much older versions of Android. Security updates being years out of date might have an issue with banking apps for example. One of my phones runs Android 10 and everything still works ok. I have a pixel phone now though which is always up to date.
