im looking to add a additional heat source to my heat pump. My current setup is the flow has one pump which diverts into 3 zones 1.Dhw 2. Zone 1 heating 3. Zone 2 heating these have motorised valves on them which are controlled by stats. On the return they all link into one pipe returning to the heat pump.

Is it possible to put a heat exchanger on the return line to the heat pump? Say have heat pump return flowing through secondary side of HEX and my additional heat source through the primary??

The motorised valves or the HP pump could control when the additional heat source pump kicks in.
