This is a new one to me. Friend has a mazda2 2014 and last week when driving the dipped beam fades and they have to resort to full beam. Next day same happens. All I can think of is a faulty switch.

    Help

I've no idea what the issue is but surely it's unwise to drive that car at night?

Voltage drop when the wires heat up?

Faulty relay or connectors. Bulbs may also be faulty, although unlikely with bot at the same time. I'd look at the relay first.

Just a follow up. After careful inspection it was noted that the headlamps had oxyidised badly in that a film had built up on the glass/plastic. Using a merton product they cleaned up nicely and so far so good. Apparently car is parked on drive facing south and uv rays causes this oxidisation.

This from Ai " Oxidation on headlamps occurs when the plastic lens becomes dull and yellow due to exposure to UV rays and environmental factors, reducing visibility while driving. This can be restored through cleaning methods like wet sanding and polishing, which help remove the oxidized layer and improve clarity"

As they say you learn something new everyday.

I think people thought by your description that the lights would come on bright but then fade slowly. Rather than them just being dim.
