If i buy a car in the UK put it in my own name on a friends address then transfer car to Northern Ireland for three months then bring it down south and register it on irish plates.

Will it make any difference that it remains in my own name the whole process or should it change name when it goes to Northern Ireland for the three months.

Ie. should i change it to a northern ireland residents name i.e sell it on then buy it back after three months

I presume when it left in my name the whole way through it will look pretty obvious what i have done to avoid some of the duty

    I reside in southern Ireland

When you export a vehicle from the UK you don’t sign the V5. You take the first page of the V5 with you to the VRT office and the seller can post the export section if they so wish.

So if your friend in Northern Ireland is the one buying the car and keeping it for 3 months, he would take ownership of the car and then give you the V5 when he sells it to you and he can post the export slip if he so wishes

I intend to buy the car next week in the uk then take it to northern ireland to a friends place register it there leave it there for three months and then bring it down south and register it in the republic.

My friend will use it in northern ireland for three months as it will have open insurance.

    So my Questions are.

For the whole process can it be left in my name or will it cause problems when i go register it and pay the vrt here.

Is it just VRT i will be paying is there any other hidden charges

If it has a Northern Ireland MOT with 9 months left will it need to go for a nct straight away or in 9 months after the northern ireland mot expires

Thanks every one for all your help on this

Like I said already, the car will not be registered in your name if you are exporting it. You will only pay VRT if the car spends 3+ months in private ownership in Northern Ireland, and the previous MOT is non transferable

Where is the fraud? The rule is that the vehicle is in private use and registered in NI. Seems the OP is clarifying how to follow that rule. Most people wouldn’t bother with that.

The powers that be haven’t exactly made it clear (on purpose) about the actual time the vehicle is to be registered up north. Bit scammy there, as they can just turn anyone away using their clear as mud rules. “Only 6 months and only 500 miles since the MOT…nah bud, on yer bike”.

The OP does not seem to live in the north so who is going to register it there? What false statements would need to be made to DVLA to re register the car and to an insurance company to obtain insurance falsely. The OP has preplanned the purchase of the car such that it is impossible for it to become the property of any person in NI. There are rules in place for the transfer of goods from GB to NI which would have to be evaded in order to live the car to NI when it is intended for ultimate transmission to ROI. That’s before the false paperwork is presented to the Irish authorities.

His friend will have it registered there, as he said/asked.

Thanks to the unpolished turd of regulations, the OP need only have the car registered to an address in NI and the car be in general use. What defines general use? Nothing. There is no requirement for the vehicle to be taxed, insured or MOTd prior to bringing it into NI. So, general use could be appreciating the car as a work of art, or listening to the radio in it.

once the V5 is presented after 3+ months of NI registration, then that is all that is needed.

Now, it may not be the spirit of the law being followed, but the wording is. As long as the OP follows the rules, it’s fair game. Everyone else can take their high horse elsewhere.
