Hi all , recently talking about goat shooting and it turns out a large number of shooters have been misinformed that goats have become a protected species???

I met someone with a connection to the group making these claims they were adamant that shooting goats somehow was illegal ….

checked the legal status there and surely there is no legal protections nothing just a group lobbying for it

Anyone else come across these false rumours ??

There seems to be a misconception that they're a native wild mammal. Not true at all from everything I've read

Proably coming from those people wanting to preserve the "Old Irish Goat" breed and have some isolated pockets of the breed around Howth? The Burren? and Waterford? They claim that it was brought here in the Bronze age or Celtic times.

Trouble is;the strain isn't a pure strain anymore, like the Kerry red deer as they have no doubt X bred with other domestic goat breeds over the centuries that have gone feral.

Fine if they want a sanctury for breeding the pure old Irish strain back, but an outright ban on any type of feral goat breed being hunted is not going to happen, and doesnt exist,as goats arent even mentioned in the wildlife acts FIK. Which is what the Antis and these groups are pushing for.

I've a wandering herd on one of my lets that can vary between 20 to over 140 at any given time and they are a multi breed variety of every domestic goat that has gone feral in Ireland over the years.

wonder if it half stems from what farmers are telling lads shooting as well.

Farmer told someone I know that he couldn’t shoot goats anymore as they needed a permit to shoot them.

If there was anything offical about permits for goat hunting,we'd have heard about it ,either Govt and/or organisations. They aren't protected and can be hunted 365 days a year.Apart from a petition on change org to get the Auld Irish goat onto the wildlife act there is nothing offical that I can find on them.Just the usual Antis ravings and spitting venom at "Trophy hunters blasting them,"etc etc…You know how they do prattle on.So carry on.

sorry to hi-Jack this but do any of you come across wild pigs / boars often, my friend who’s a farmer saw 2 of them on his land, they absolutely ploughed up a section of his field, he asked me to shoot them, are we allowed shoot them?

More than likely feral pigs rather than genuine wild boar.Have at them, another 365 and invasive species listed animal so long as you have a big enough caliber, like starting at 243 with the heaviest expanding loads you can find or shotgun slugs.Wild pigs have their own muscle body armour in the shoulder, head and neck.So you need some oomph to punch thru that for a heart shot.
