We will be adding a single story 40sqm extension on to the back of the house and we have a builder lined up for mid October. Estimated build time is 8 weeks so I'm factoring in 12 weeks. Everyone I have spoken to (family / friends) have said to not build during winter but to ask the builder to reschedule for March / April. Is it really such a terrible idea to build in winter?

Are you planning to stay in the house or vacating it? If you're staying in situ, can most of the work be done up to being water-tight on the new portion before opening the connecting, wall or how long do they expect to have the house fully exposed over that time?

We are staying in the house. No time frame as of yet as to how long the back would be open for but it's 75% of the back wall coming out. Friends of mine were saying that due to the colder weather the concrete doesn't set properly etc…that we are setting ourselves up for a disaster etc…

I'm not sure where they are getting that information from, but concrete cures fine during Winter but needs to be protected from frost or freezing over. Have they direct experience with this or is it just from the depths of lore? Our climate is relatively mild but wet, are you sure that they aren't from Minnesota? 😁

There are specific protections listed for concrete, but none of what they foretell:

The typical issues experienced over Winter are the setbacks due to the weather where the builder may elect to work on other sites where there is protection from the elements.
