Velux window replacement - supplier suggestions / installer suggestions if not a DIY job

    Hi All,

Looking for advice - we have 3 velux in the attic. Code of GGL 304 suggests they are at least 25 years old and they are looking the worse for wear. I want to replace them but not sure if it's a DIY job or if a roofer or other experienced professional will be needed.

There's a few videos out there that make it look like a reasonable job, however i was thinking of replacing then with a slighter deeper size, which probably adds a bit of complication.

It's a standard 3 bed semi with a tiled roof (wavy cement tiles) with two velux in the back and one in the front. I am going to do some work on the attic conversion at the same time so will need a plasterer when all is finished anyway so not too worried about making a mess.

The front window will be a straight replacement but the back two i want to put in two longer windows (adding about 40cm to the length of the window vertically if that makes sense).

My current windows are all 78*98. I would like to replace two with 78*118 or 140 (if it will fit).

Online resources suggest a direct replacement for the GGL304 is a MK04 and if I want the extra height I can go for an MK06 or MK08.

Anyone recommend suppliers for these, and flashings, and would you recommend giving it a go as a competent DIY er - albeit never done roofing!

If you think it's a job for a pro any recommendations in the north wicklow area?

    Thanks

Hi, I'm not sure whether that is DIYable or not - it's obviously going to need roof-level work so there is a fair chunk of inherent risk in that.

What I would do is, I'd strip off the plasterboard all around one of the Velux and have a good look at the rafters and battens and also inspect the state of the roof membrane and see whether you want to proceed. At that point at least you can still back-out without having caused damage and retain some level of pride. 😆 Next challenge is to decide whether you can work on the roof and keep yourself and those around you safe from things like falling tiles, etc.

Having considered doing this job once before I found the guides and videos online to be very clear and it seemed like a straight-forward job, with the flashing being the fiddly bit. As far as I recall all of the flashings are included in the package as long as you purchase the correct window package for your roof-type.

Hi OP, I've done a few, both replacement and from scratch, nothing special about them if you're familiar with roof work, and you'll save a lot of € if you can DIY it.

Replacing like for like will be simpler with a bit more work involved in the modifications you've mentioned.

As said already, plenty of videos out there with some good advice and examples, watch as many as you can until you're happy enough.

I'd suggest starting with the easier replacement one to get a feel for it before moving onto the harder ones.

Getting decent weather for it will hopefully be the most awkward part! Best of luck. 👍🏻

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Been a few years since I've done any so out of touch with prices now, I'd just go with whoever is cheapest for what you want.

If you're getting 3 make sure to ask about a discount, might not get any but if you don't ask you definitely won't get!

I even got some from B&Q a long time ago as they were almost giving them away on a clearance.
