Quick question on Virgin broadband installation

Hi all, in my father's house there is already an ONT in the hallway from an original Vodafone install and he currently is with Pure Telecom (which only required plugging out the old and plugging in the new router).

He is now looking at Virgin broadband for this year when his contract is up. I thought I had read that Virgin is different from other ISP's but am wondering if he does go with Virgin, would it be a simple switch like a couple of years ago or do Virgin need to come along and install their own access point? I tried ringing them but there was a 20 minute wait for new customer queries so they obviously don't want too many new customers.

    Many thanks in advance.

With Vodafone & Pure what wholesale network is your father on? It all depends on whether Virgin Media has access to that wholesale network or not, or if they are they are installing their own fibre which will mean a new fibre cable to be installed and their router set up

VM have access to NBI and SIRO but not OpenEir.

I was going to switch to Virgin except I discovered that they needed to send out a technician to wire up the fibre end point which would mean it would be more difficult to switch back to any of the other BB providers who would then have to do the same.

As @pizzahead77 has said it depends on what access network is installed currently. If it’s only Open Eir that is installed, a new connection will be needed.

If it’s SIRO or NBI then most likely Virgin will use that but make sure to provide Virgin the current UAN or SIRO account number that should be on the bill or you might have to ask Pure Telecom for it.

You can check here to see which access networks are available at the address. If Virgin Media Coax or FTTP does show as available, they will want to use that over anything else -

If Virgin install their own fibre end point it will be in addition to your existing fibre, they wont remove OpenEir/SIRO ONT's so you can always easily switch back to other ISP's from Virgin (and Virgin now wholesale so some ISP's might use the Virgin fibre).
