Caught the 8 different accents in that trailer, elements of the troubles, some butcher boy type sci-fi, might have something

Christ, this could have been something.

DDL is flawless as usual, as is Sean Bean is the perfect foil, not meek as per Dano in TWBB (as written).

The script was good imho, some of DDL's soliloquies will remind you of TWBB, ferocious then timid as required, man is still dialed.

So the problems, the editing is missing, scenes are over far before the progression happens. Ronan Day Lewis fancies himself as Terence Malick, long shots over an over aggressive score. Samantha Morton seems marooned on the mainland. Then there's a couple of fantastical scenes, which are strongly pushed in the trailers, to give a haunting shade of menace/horror, these amount to nothing bar head scratching.

    Overall 3/5

Nepo baby rubbish what a waste of real acting talent just to give a nepo baby a chance to direct

Such a grim take on a father and son going making something together. The two of them wrote it together too, so it’s very much a shared story and shared project.

That trailer sells it well, going to have a look at this over the weekend.

I can't think of any actor more compelling than Day-Lewis, truly something special about the man, even if the films in which he appears aren't always worth watching, he always is.

Watched it today anyway… flawed, but there's something there. As you kinda expect with a young director, at times he does too much, not yet showing restraint for what might be cool to be there versus what needs to be there - in the first 30 mins or so especially he overcomplicates some bits and pieces that would've been better off left simple. For the most part it settled down after that point though.

Very much an understated mood piece, something to settle into and go with rather than expect to be caught up in, but for me that still worked, and Day-Lewis and Sean Bean are just always incredibly watchable. Thought Bean was actually better here, where Day-Lewis was a bit over-egged at times. All in all, I've seen far worse first features.
