Blackout blinds on a budget for large window?

IKEA sell roller blackout blinds 200 x 195 for what seems a very fair €37. Unfortunately I need 240 x 165. I put this into the calculator on https://kavanaghshome.ie/ and the price is €300.

Where can I find a price closer to that of IKEA for a basic white roller blackout blind?

Thanks better pricing but they only drop to 170 when I need 240.

    Just to be absolutely clear.

Do you have a window that is much taller than it is wide?

240cm drop sounds like floor to ceiling unless it's on a stairs. Likewise 165cm sounds pretty narrow for such a big piece.

We had to do a eindow years back that was over 3m wide. I got two IKEA roller blinds and managed to line the break up with a vertical windowframe piece between the main pane and the part that opened.

Thanks €129.99 is a much better price. The cheapest non-thermal white I have been able to find is Sevilla Blackout Brilliant White Roller Blind at €159.29.

Normally I would take any opportunity for anything that improves insulation — and I may still go for thermal — but I have been melting in this new apartment day and night. One of the architects told me that all gaps in the walls etc. have been eliminated so they had to provide air conditioning but I do not want to run it. I'm told this is a nice problem to have!

Yes, the window is from the floor to the ceiling so taller than it is wide. That is smart about using the two IKEA blinds, I was thinking of something similar for venetian blinds I explain below but I am not sure it can work.

Just to explain the room and what I would like:

I have my computer set up in the bedroom and right now to keep the light off the screen I have to close the curtains and sit in a darkened room, so although I will enjoy the room being much darker for sleep what I really need the blind for is being able to pull it down just enough to keep the light off the screens — without it being so dark.

I have a triple IKEA curtain rod up with: TERESIA sheer curtain (voile) for privacy » SILVERLÖNN sheer curtains » Some regular old curtains. I thought the SILVERLONN would stop the glare but they do not. They are thick enough for extra privacy in the evening when lights are on inside though so they are useful.

In addition to the blackout blind I would like venetian blinds (perhaps also removing one or both of the sheer curtains) but it is a 'three pane casement/light configuration' window as per the diagram, where just one window opens inward and it is a tilt and turn so it can open from the top or the side. I could use two venetian blinds, split across the vertical window frame but it would mean I would have to the right blind fully up to fully open the window, and now that I think of it it would also hit the top mechanism of the blind when opened. They bay is about a foot deep so I could put them outside of the bay but then there is nowhere for a roller blind. I am not really sure what to do.

Might it be more effective to rearrange some furniture?

    Have you any flexibility there?

Facing the window would sort the glare and be better for your eyes and your headspace if it's possible!

Well I do not have to have venetians, they would just be a bonus, and the roller blind will work once large enough. Having 3 separate blinds to open, close, and adjust could get annoying but they sure would look nice — I think!

The only way to face the window would be to put the desk and dual monitors right up against it, and it would mean the bed is very close to the door also. I have these around the back of the monitors to help with eye health: MediaLight Mk2 v2 Eclipse (2024 New Version) For Computer Displays - 2 Meters. They are supposed to make the surrounding wall more similar to the monitor so it is easier on your eyes. I think it might actually be bad for your eyes to position monitors at a window looking out?

I wouldn't like to have the monitor right in the window either, but being able to look out without turning your head 180' is healthy to allow you to focus into the distance regularly.

Here's another thought though: narrow individual blinds are also easier to automate, so you could have one button that raises or lowers them together.

    A little pricier though!

    Last suggestion (probably!).
I just found IKEA blinds that stick to the glass and can slide up or down, so you could leave a top area unblinded to allow natural light through. You could mount a second to the pane of the tilt-and-turn and one to the static pane. They're €19 or €25 per panel depending on width 60x130 or 100x130.

I put up a temporary blind (Schottis) on my dad's bathroom window a few years back after the sun melted the glue holding his roller blind together. It was a few quid in IKEA, stuck to the window frame and I trimmed it with a bread knife. I'm about to change it and I'm going to use one of these.

    Search ikea.ie for HORNVALLMO.
