Ford Ranger Reliability

    Hi all,

    I’m about to purchase a 2021 Ford Ranger 2.0 and wondering has anyone any feedback?

    My father who loves all things Toyota has said they have big reliability issues which has now made me nervous. Anyone know how true this is? Anything in particular I should look out for?

    Buying from a dealer so there would be some form of protection with a 6 month warranty

    Search for ford ranger Wet Belt and have a good gander over the results, oil changes would need to be done on the button, and even at that belts can start to break down. Check if belt has been replaced already,New belts not cheap, but neither is a new engine.

    stay well clear. absolute heap of crap. had 2020 one and wet belt went, €1300 to fix and then 1 month later dpf issue…another €400.


    all of this happened within 6 months of buying private where i had it checked over by mechanic.

    not worth it, i’d be surprised if anyone here tells you different

    Thanks Donal. Not what I was hoping to hear as I love the look of them. Beautiful vehicle. I had done a bit of research and seen they were uncomfortable on the road, that rear seats weren’t the best but from a reliability point of view they seemed to be comparable to a Hilux - which is the pinnacle of reliability as far as I can see.


    Generally there’s great advice from the good folk on here so thank you for that

    In a past life I drove Hilux, L200, D-Max and Rangers for work. Everyone on the job hated the Ranger. We never serviced (this was taking care of by our company) so I can’t speak to reliability but they were uncomfortable and people would actively avoid taking it.

    This was in 2019 so may not be same model as your suggesting and not sure if it was the 2.0 engine either but worth taking note

    Another poster said same thing. I will need to speak to dealer again tomorrow as I’m nearly sure they said it was changed 10k ago…not sure if this is any use or a reoccurring issue regardless of milage?


    When you say neither is a new engine, do you mean it also gives engine trouble?

    Unfortunately there aren't a huge selection of pickup truck models to choose from on the Irish market. But of those that are, the Ranger would be last on my list.

    A friend of mine has bought a couple of KGM Grand Mussos for his business and is happy with them. I've driven one and it was unexpectedly good.

    They come with a 5 year warranty too, so if your budget for the '21 Ford could be stretched to a Musso, you might be pleasantly surprised.

    no personal experience of Rangers but I've seen plenty of videos on YouTube of the woes people have had with the wet belt replacements, so I would steer clear

    Any idea if a recently changed belt makes a difference? Or can they go at any point?

    I know two people that had that Ranger and the sills rotted on both in quick time. Neither were doing heavy lifting on building sites. Carting around fences so needed clearance for ground. Avoid.

    Of course it makes a difference. If you were buying one you would need to see proof that the belt has actually been done and then change the oil every 10,000 km. Or if there is no proof then budget for a new wet belt immediately

    I’ll have to make double sure but assuming the belt has been changed 10k ago, does that change the decision or are they just trouble in general regardless of wet belt?

    Pal had a 2022 with endless issues, constantly getting warranty work done. Sold it before the wet belt became a problem, a number of dealers wouldn't touch it as a trade in.

    Not particularly, but they can be expensive to work on when things go wrong. I think the timing chain is at the back of the engine for example

    They only sell the Amarok with the 3.0 V6 so it doesn’t have the issues of the 2.0. You can buy the Ranger 3.0 also which is similar money to the amarok. I think the Ranger is the nicer jeep (nicest of all the pickups) especially with a raptor kit (obviously the raptor itself is nicest of all but it’s expensive and has reduced towing capacity).

    It’s a pity they didn’t put a 2.0 tdi engine in the Ranger since they are sharing so much else. I really like the Ranger and even with the issues they still tempt me (with the idea of doing the wet belt immediately on purchasing one).
