Original take off time 16:20 - Actual take off time about 22:30

we were on the tarmac and had to go back to the gate, 6 hour delay. We were told when we eventually boarded the plane that it had a bird strike on the way over to Salou.

I get that bird strikes are outside the control of the airline but it seems the real reason for such a long delay was that they had no engineering staff to clear the plane to fly in Salou and the engineers had to be flown in from Milan. (I spotted (and photographed, nice plane!)the ryanair challenger 3500 jet landing at around 19:45 which is used to ferry around engineers / parts ect..), they made reference to this when we got on the plane as well, plus something about a staff change

What way does the compensation work for this type of situation?

ignore take off time, it’s landing time that counts

bird strike are generally excluded from EU261 compensation
