Encrypting files on Ubuntu

    Hi

I'm interested in knowing what the best way is to encrypt files on Ubuntu? I was recommended Cryptkeeper but it appears it is now redundant. I am concerned about getting locked out of the files so I'm not sure which is best.

    Thank you

Give us more info. Are you looking to protect individual files (file level encryption), or for a protected folder with restricted access, or an archive of protected files (such as a zip), or would you be looking to setup a protected partition (full disk encryption)?

The files I'm interested in protecting are PDFs, Folders, ZIP Folders and Libre Office Files.

Sounds Like you need an encrypted folder then. There are a few options but eCryptfs seems to be doable.

I'll have a play here with eCryptfs over the weekend and see what its like in terms of portability.

Have a look at VeraCrypt, it seems functional, actively developed and easy to use from the desktop. eCryptfs needs to be run and mounted from the command-line, which can be a pain, but could be a second option.

I think I'll give that veracrypt a go. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks!
