Leap tap on/off question

With the new Leap fare zones being introduced, I just wanted to clarify if this whole area is covered by tap on and tap off with the Leap card. In other words can I tap on at Skerries train station and tap off at Drogheda? Or do I need to have some pre-purchased ticket on my card?

Tag on and tag off as normal, once you have enough credit on the card you are fine

I'm moving from using annual taxsaver pass on bus/luas to using regular leap as will be changing jobs in a few months. I get an X bus in the mornings and then a regular bus in town onto my workplace. Is the X bus included in the 90 min fare or would I be charged €2.40 for the X bus and then another €2 for the second bus in town?

I've no personal knowledge or experience, but I think it could be that you get charged the 2.40 xpresso fare, and you can then still do the Leap90 change. From the NTA Fares Determination.

Yes the €2.40 is inclusive of the 90 minute fare.

I've never really understood the "express" rating on these services. On my route into the city center the X buses stop at the exact same stops as the "normal" buses so take the same amount of time yet it costs 40 cent more. Is there something I'm missing here?

Every X route serves fewer stops or serves some stops as set down only.

I get the 69X in the morning and it's signifcantly quicker than the non X service. 69x skips all of Clondalkin Village and the estates in the morning and goes straight down Con Colbert as opposed to Islandbridge & Parkgate St which can be traffic clogged at that hour.

The aulder drivers know exactly what stops are meant to be served, but the newer lads seem to stop whenever someone rings the bell or has the arm out. Does lead to some funny arguments when the aulder drivers (rightly!) don't stop for the bell, and some poor passenger goes 'but I got off here all week' when they want out at Bluebell or wherever.

Drivers picking up at setdown only or vice-versa is a driver issue. If it's bad enough on your route, I suppose you can report that service at that time to Dublin Bus. Don't know what good it'll do, but worth a shot.

    another Leap question.

When I touch on at Greystones (Z2) it deducts €7.50, then returns €3.60 when I touch off at Sydney Parade for a fare of €3.90. So far, so expected…

Coming home, when I touch on at SP it only take €6. Irish Rail have posters up stating the new touch on amount is €7.50, why is it less here - capping? I know the Z1 daily cap is €6 but it's not clear how that cap interacts with journey across zones.

Is it that it assumes your longest possible journey and takes that fare, and then refunds when you tag off?

So for example Greystones to Laytown is €7.50 so it takes that when you tag-on at Greystones.
But Sydney Parade to Laytown is just €6.

If you’re boarding in zone 1, the minimum balance is €6 before tagging on.

The €7.50 applies to journeys starting in zones 2 to 4.

I can’t explain that logic though.

    From

    https://www.transportforireland.ie/fares/new-fare-zones/

I’m a rail customer. Do I need a minimum balance to travel?

    Yes:

    • Zone 1 rail travel: Minimum balance of €1.00
    • Zones 2–4 rail travel: Minimum balance of €2.50”

(add to that the €5 deposit to give you the €6 or €7.50).

cheers - it's annoying that capping doesn't seem to apply outside Z1 as having to add tickets in advance isn't the same (I may not know how many journeys I'll take in a week for one thing).

If you start a (train) journey in Z2 and then get on a bus in Z1, do I have an active 90 minute ticket or do I get charged €2?

Last time I was charged €2 on the bus, but I think it might have been more than 90 minutes from the start of the journey.

The 90 minute fare applies in Z1 even if you started from an outer zone (train→ bus only AFAIK)

I'd imagine the drivers don't want the aggro. Also bare in mind a spare driver would typically do all the routes out of a garage so while s/he might know all the routes they might not know where each exact stop is on an Xpresso. So the easiest thing to do is just pick up and drop off wherever there's a stop.
