Can someone give me recommendations for the best Saorview box that does this; allows recording to USB and allows you to watch another channel while recording? It only has to be RF in, I don't need satellite input.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

You can't buy a DVR box that allows you to record to USB and watch another channel at the same time. But there is a workaround; I can split the antennae cable using this; https://www.diy.ie/departments/slx-2-way-coaxial-aerial-splitter-19003qr-04/5028422001882_BQ.prd?gQT=1

I put one end into the RF input on the DVR box and select the channel on it that I want to record and record it. I put the other end into the TV and watch that. I think I can view the channel on the TV that is being recorded on the DVR by using a HDMI out on the DVR box that goes to the TV.

    Might work.

Does it need to be USB as the recordings will be encrypted and only playable on the box that recorded them. Look for a freeview HD box with twin tuners as that will pickup saorview and allow you to watch another channel whilst recording

    cant go wrong with Humax

AFAIK , those boxes are for UK freeview only , and wont work with the much later tech used for Saorview.

UK Freeview and Irish Saorview are not compatible.

How does the Humax box handle the Saorview channels?

In the past their boxes weren't Saorview friendly, placing the channels at random in the 800s.

Maybe someone that uses the box with Saorview can report.

As long as its freeviewHD it will work fo saorview, my old box is a good few years old now so was placing them in the 800's but I could create a favourites list and add them and use that to cycle between them

It doesn't have to be USB but I would prefer if it was because I might want to transfer it to a DVD. Not possible with that device. That link says it is not certified by Saorview. It may be compatible with Saorview however.

Humax never did Saorview certified receivers unfortunately. I used several of their satellite boxes and liked them.

The FreeviewHD spec ensures Saorview MPEG-4 video compatibility but the receiver specification, D-Book vs. Nordig, means there's issues with channel positioning during tuning.

An Ireland option during initial installation would've great but didn't happen. And won't happen now with the transition to IP.
