Just watching the ladies football and prior to throw-in between Galway and Waterford the worst rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann was sung.

Why, oh why does the GAA persevere with this instead of just playing a recording by the Army Band or the Artane Band.

    Brutal.

Some counties and clubs fall into the trap of the American sports and letting any old chubby kid pick up a mic and commit a war crime against the national anthem. All the notes are in there, just not necessarily in the order Peadar Kearney wrote them.

As far as I'm concerned, Amhrán na nhFiann should have strict guidelines similar to the national flag. It is a military march of the German tradition in B-flat, and 4/4 time signature. Brass or orchestral. There should be absolutely no departure from that, and if someone is going to sing over it in public, they should be capable of delivering a dignified performance, and never do it unaccompanied.

Scór is part of the GAA. They give recognition to successful competitors in the Solo Singing by appointing them to sing at matches. The Ulster folk like to see that happening.

Unfortunately the rules for the national flag make no difference whatsoever. Rules barring symbols, writing etc. on the flag are blatantly ignored.

Even the proportions (2:1 for anyone unaware) are wrong 95% of the time outside of government use. Try buy an Irish flag and nearly all your options will be 60 * 90cm or 90 * 150cm. A few places will give a 90 * 180cm option, but they'll also sell the wrong versions, or tricolours with the 1916 proclamation or a harp on them too 🙄.

It's a long standing tradition that the National Anthem is strangled before a GAA game by a local "cailin" trying to sing it into the worst sound system from the 1970's.

There's no point changing it now. We expect no different

I take a badly sung version over that crap the rugby song. They sing that with more passion that the national anthem. I actually like singing the anthem before a game.

No one is stopping you singing it out to your hearts content, accompanying a good version.

Also, the Georgian Women's and Girl's choir did a fine version of Ireland's Call there an hour ago! Again, its all about the arrangement.

    A war crime 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Sorry I spit out me tea reading that.

It's very common even at club matches around the country to have a local lass singing it. Usually very good but not the type of signing that would encourage more then a murmur from the crowd like you were in mass.

Interesting the announcer at Croker told fans to respect the anthem till very end today and yesterday.

    Still didn't happen...

People who get worked up about flags and anthems being respected are not to be trusted.

This boils my piss. Why is it the tradition at any gaa match to start shouting before the end of the anthem? Players are nearly instigating it by running off to their position before it ends.

it’s an awful ‘tradition’ alright, coaches and mentors probably the blame. if from u12 onwards it was instilled in players by mentors and parents then there would be some chance of full anthem respect but like a lot of things in this Cuntry it’s a case of ‘ah shur wat are ya worried about horse’ incidentally the ‘soccer crowd’ are usually very respectful of the anthem for some reason….?
