I'm looking for a couple William Smith of Kilreesk and Catherine McEvoy who had a daughter Philomena Smith at Kilreesk, St Margaret's in November 1928. Philomena died in Luton, Bedfordshire, England in 2018.

Philomena's birth cert lists those parents but I can't find a marriage for that couple. How likely is it that the father would be named on the birth cert in 1924 if the couple were not married?

Wondering if there would be any street directories for that part of Dublin in the mid-1920s? I've failed to find any McEvoys in that area in the 1911 census and although there were one or two Smiths, none were likely.

Will post the birth cert in a comment below.

Note that birth took place in 1928 - not 1924.

Also, as the entry for the mother reads Smith formerly McEvoy it's most likely that the parents were married.

Street directories for rural areas in that era would rarely list everyone; unfortunately - but lots of 20s directories for Dublin are on askaboutireland and other places

I can't find a marriage registration for my grandparents either ( married in 1928). I did find the marriage though in the Catholic parish register.

The priest I think was responsible in those days for registering the marriage and sometimes it appears this was forgot about. This happened a lot I'm told for all sorts of reasons.

If the mothers maiden name was given in the birth certificate then it is fairly certain they were married.

I also searched a very long time for an 1880 marriage. Eventually I found the church record but it seems there were a series of records not returned to Dublin for the Civil register. A pity as the church record has less information.

If the parents were not married, then the father could only be named if he was present to register the birth with the mother. This was actually the law, so that's why we see so many births without a father's name.

Have you tried variant spellings? St Margaret's would be under Balrothery SRD. I was looking at Thom's recently and they only have small sections for rural parts of Dublin, e.g. Swords, Malahide have entries but not smaller places. They usually only list the notable people in them too.
