I'm trying to find my grandmother birth cert. Really trying to find out who her father was and hoping it's on her birth cert. I know she was born in the north of Ireland and her date of birth in 1924. I know her mother's name but none of the site I've check are showing anything GRONI online or Irish genealogy. Any suggestions where I'm going wrong. Thanks

When you say north of Ireland do you mean Northern Ireland specifically or the northern part of Ireland generally.

If she was born in Northern Ireland in 1924 and there is a record of her birth it will be with GRONI.

However, if her birth was registered after 1924 it won't be online yet because of the 100 year rule.

Also, what's your source for her name and year of birth?

EDIT: Just checked the site and there are some results showing for 1925 (maybe late registrations) but nothing after that.

She was born in Armagh I was thinking GRONI would have the detail but nothing showing up. She was born December 1924 and my aunt told me all the details. You could be right about late registration.

If she was born in December then there's a good chance her birth wasn't registered till early '25.

Perhaps if you contact GRONI directly they may be able to help you with ordering a post-24 cert.

Or would she have had any older siblings who's certs you could check?

GRONI has records rolling released so they should currently have up to June 1925.

    The most likely issues are:

    registered later than this

    born later than this

    registered under a different name

What does it say on your grandmother's marriage certificate about her parents? If she was married in NI, it should say her father's name. If she was married in the Republic after 1956, it would have both parents.

Have you tried a grandmother's surname + mother's name marriage search?

I'm assuming you are not thinking that perhaps she was born outside of marriage. In which case, her father wouldn't be named on her birth cert, but she'd have her mother's surname.

Her mother had her when she was I think 19 outside of marriage and has no older sibling from whom ever the father was. Her marriage cert has her step Dad named on it, was married in Dublin 1944. I've tried a few permutation but nothing showing in GRONI. Probably need to give them a shout directly. Thanks

If they were not married, it will not say her father's name. An unmarried woman could only name a father in those circumstances if he actually came with her to register the birth.
