Aer Lingus Not allowing Seat Selection with Infants?

Was on an Aer Lingus flight there yesterday, with my wife and kids (both under 3). When I booked it I wasn't allowed pay for a seat selection as we had a lap infant.

Checking in on the app then it only gave me and the lap infant boarding passes. And said we needed to check in on the desk. When I did that, my wife and the other kid were given standby boarding passes. Presumably because the flight was overbooked, and since most other people on the plane would have selected their seat in advance, we're the ones put on standby.

Now, it was kind of a non event in the end, since we got on the plane, albeit not seated together. But what would have happened if a seat didn't become free? Would we have had to split up our family and go on different flight? Also, it was me (the dad) and the baby who had seats assigned. But the baby needs to be breastfed. It's a potential nightmare. It's really scared me off ever booking Aer Lingus again if this is their policy. It seems perverse that their system is set up in a way where families with babies are the ones most likely to be bumped?

Has anyone else had a similar experience? What happens if a seat's not available?
