I just got my hands on a Zappi Glo EV charging point for my own house. A very well designed unit which made installation easy. These are very new to the market. As can be seen it has no buttons or screen.

To commission it is necessary to register as an installer (quite straightforward) and download the “installer assistant” app. The app is well thought out but presents a few challenges. For example the installation address defaults to the UK. Once saved it is not possible to change this parameter and many others without a full factory reset, which necessitates starting the process again. Overall a very impressive piece of kit and far more compact than the previous Zappi which I always thought looked very retro and bulky.

The app connects to the Zappi over Bluetooth and communicates with other devices in the My Energie ecosystem over Zigbee. This Zappi also connects to WiFi. So all in all 3 wireless protocols.

Having to factory reset to change registration details is a common enough thing in the IT or IOT device world, nothing too unusual there.

So are you one of these new-fangled influencers for the electrical world, should we expect to see demos and statements on how you never knew life was so hard before you got the Zappi next? 😝

Too old to be an influencer! I’m off my tools a long time but the installation part was easier than expected. I had expected the set up to be more straightforward to be honest. The RFID card pairing was easy until it stopped recognizing the card which necessitated another factory reset. Anyway all sorted.

Did you install it as a DIYer or as a practicing electrician?

I used a Wallbox Pulsar Plus for five years, but its 💩 terminal block design failed. The cable bracket broke, slowly pulling the cable out and causing a short that burned out the block. A €50 repair attempt led to losing the main pad for L1 on the PCB, writing off the charger. Wallbox offered a Pro model for €700, but issues reported on forums put me off.

The Zappi Glo caught my eye as a Pulsar Plus alternative. I need load balancing due to an electric shower, don’t mind app-only control (Wallbox had it), and prefer its design (not a 🚽 seat) 😉. I have the wiring, isolator, and 32A RCBO from my old charger, so most of the work is done.

I also have a power meter with a CT clamp, but I’m unsure if it’s compatible with the Glo. Mine has four wires (12–24V, GND, 2× RS485), while MyEnergi’s CT clamp seems to use only a twisted pair for RS485. Does the Glo include a CT clamp, or must I buy one separately?

So far, I’ve applied for an installer quote via MyEnergi, receiving two no-replies and one rejection from Cork-area companies. Is self-installation feasible?

In response to the above, I’m a sparks by trade and spend a long time on my tools. Having said that I’m a long time off my tools. So I’m neither a professional nor a DIYer.

The Zappi Glo comes with one CT on a 10 m single pair unscreened cable. However I don’t need this as it connects wirelessly to the My Eddie which has a CT on the mains cable to the CU.

Relying on a wireless connection for load balancing seems a bit like blind faith.

I don't agree, the wireless connection works very well and during testing I found that it responds quick to a load change.

Besides I don't need to rely on it as I have no sizable electrical loads in my house. Even my plug in hybrid can only draw a maximum of 3.6 kW.
