NT-700 In the Rain.

    I went for a ride Friday with a friend who has a Pan European 1300 , we rode around Kildare and got caught in some pretty heavy rain and I was bone dry, I couldn't believe it, my legs too I think, they didn't feel wet.

    Showers were forecast so I put in the water proof liner but when we stopped to get a break I had to take it out again because I was wetter from sweating than from the rain.

    I'm very impressed with the ability of the Deauville to keep the rain off, my Jacket, even arms and shoulders were bone dry, I couldn't believe it.

    The NT-1100 , the so called successor to the NT-700 doesn't look like it has near the level of weather protection.

    I had a Duey, and where the rain used get me on that is broadly similar to where the rain gets me on the 1100


    then again, I seem to remember you have mentioned having difficulty flat footing both feet. I was well able to do that on the duey, still able to do in on the 1100, so while the rain may be able to get me that might be more to do with the difference in our statures rather than any marked difference in the bikes.

    re NT1100, not the 2025 model as i havent ridden one, but the NT1100 that was released 2 / 3 years absolutely needs a hugger, and you also get blowback of crud / water through the cockpit sweeping up from under the forks over the tank onto your lid. I was riding it two up in rain and cruddy roads at the time on way back to Dublin. pillion was filthy, as were the boxes at the back. and as was i , front of jacket with spots here and there and my lid.

    The back end, id expect dirt / water to be thrown about with no hugger off the back wheel, but coming up from the front cockpit via the forks, that would piss me off, maybe fender extender would work on front mudgaurd, but p1ss poor by honda if they didnt notice that when they built it and tested it. good bike, solid handling, great torque, display as big as it is wouldnt be slick enough for me. upgrade the rear shock also it needs it, typical honda trait, spongy and bouncy, speaking from lots of experience.

    It's not that, the fairing and screen look a lot smaller, I haven't seen it in the flesh yet though.

    There's a name for that.

    Many years ago, long before forums were invented, car magazines used to test all the new cars. Certain cars always had their foibles, ergonomically.

    Alfa Romeo, for instance, always had a slightly different ergo to (say) VW etc. Suited long arms, short legs.

    The Monza Gorilla Syndrome they used to call it 🤣

    The Deau is fantastic at keeping the weather off of you, especially if you find one with the optional foot-fairing/bellypan and the little fairing extender up by the bars. Granted, they look crap on the 650 but they work. They look a lot better on the 700 and still do a great job.

    I never heard about those fairings but I looked it up on youtube, surely doesn't look the best but worth it I suppose if you need the extra protection.

    we run a number of NT700s here, and without the bellypan, particularly on the motorway, the feet get very wet.

    These are the ones on my own bike, fairly low key really. There are some aftermarket fairing versions out there that don't look great.

    Now that you mention feet I remember water getting up as far as my shins only I was still dry because my boots go up to my shins. Never noticed last Friday when I was actually out in decent rain, I didn't feel wet probably because of the boots. I didn't feel wet above my shins either.

    Not bad looking actually.

    I remember the weather protection on the Tmax 500 was excellent, would make an ideal commuter in all weathers and you won't really mind clocking up the miles on a scooter or it getting a bit rough looking.

    The tmax 500 was comfortable too, more than the Deauville especially the riding position which is set up to be more sporty. The Tmax 500 suspension not so comfortable, smaller wheels probably something to do with it too.

    Not sure if the Forza 750 weather protection.

    I see a 2020 Tmax 560, 8000 Kms donedeal for 10,000 Euros.

    A 2018 BMW C650 GT 19,000 Kms which has 60 Hp vs Tmax roughly 45 Hp. Looks to have decent weather protection and decent enough for the money. Good spec https://www.donedeal.ie/motorbikes-for-sale/bmw-c650-gt-maxi-scooter/39850041

    Of course, forza 750 has 0 transmission maintenance vs CVT, that's a big plus.

    I don't think I'd go back to a maxi scooter any time soon but don't know how I'd take to a naked bike with no wind protection at all.

    Weather protection on the Forza 750 is so-so. You'd want handgaurds at least and maybe a slightly better screen.

    the Forza 750 has transmission maintenance AND is chain & sprocket drive, so is actually MORE maintenance than a belt, not less.

    Never thought about the dct driving chain 😂

    shame Honda have no more shaft Drives for the small efficiency gain it might provide changing to chain, shaft is dead handy.

    Thats a decent scooter for the money, fully loaded with all the options that are usually found on the top end bikes.

    Sure is, 60 Hp too, that would be a fun scooter, for the price it's a lot of bike with only 18,000 Kms, 11,184 Miles.

    Amen to that: there is no mid-size bike from anyone with a shaft drive these days, bar Moto Guzzi.

    Once upon a time you had Honda, BMW, Kawasaki, even Suzuki had ones (going back a good few years)….

    Even a belt drive alternative would be good, but even BMW dropped those (mistake, imho)

    It's the same story that's been happening cars for a long time now, they want to charge more and offer less, by less I mean the important bits, reliability and practicality, they offer more and more tech because it's easy and they can charge a fortune just because it's got a TFT screen and connects to your phone.

    In fairness, I'd much rather shaft drive than poxy TFT screen , who would rather maintain a chain vs having more tech ? I love not having to maintain a chain on the Deauville and if I want a screen I can mount my phone on the handlebars but I can use vice prompts via the headset for navigation if I need it.

    I don't know why belts are not more popular ?
