HW Stat wiring help please

Hello, I am wiring a new HW stat. The stat has 3 terminals labelled P, 1 and 2. My existing wiring has 3 cores. Earth, Brown and Black. The old stat lacks any kind of labeling whatsoever. The new stat has no documentation as to what goes where. Can anyone help?

I think I have it sorted. Turns out the particular stat, CATH01 seems to be french so I think P is actually 'Common'. I was assuming it was Earth. I have rewired Brown to P and black to 1, and all seems to work. Makes me wonder why or how code would allow this but what do I know. The original installation was done by a plumber last year as part of house renovation. The plumbing cost 30k and I was left with a miriad of issues including this one. He heft me with an incorrect stat held on by tape.
