What type of trees are these??

Can anyone tell me what type of trees these are? Would they make good firewood...in like 25 years of course?!

The top photo has Japanese knotweed in it. The others, willow.

Those are Ash trees. Dig or pull them out. They don't make attractive garden trees.

I was thinking of moving them from dublin to a piece of ground I have in mayo so that they can grow for timber in 20 / 30 years, is it advisable ?

Ash is a good timber for burning but also subject to Ash Dieback Disease.

if ash is growing local to that site you'd be better off collecting seed locally in mayo and growing that on. if it's not growing locally, it might suggest the conditions there are not great for ash.

as above though, given ash dieback, i would be planting them mainly in the hope they'd have some resistance rather than a plan to have timber in a few decades.

Any under three or four years old will, usually, pull out of the ground by hand.

With Ash Dieback it's not advisable to move Ash plants around the country and potentially spread the virus.

Ash has suffered massively in recent years and less than 5 percent of trees are resistant, imo it would be a waste of time to do anything but pull them or leave them. If it's firewood you're looking to grow I'd recommend alder, willow, poplar or Birch, they grow fast and can be harvested in a relatively short space of time. While not as efficient at heat production as hardwood they are perfectly adequate for our mild irish winters

I knew poplar and Birch were a softish hardwood (if that makes sense) i didn't know Alder and Willow were hardwood. You taught me something new today.

Hardwoods are simply woods which come from deciduous trees. Even though they can be softer than softwoods (which come from conifers)!

I was recently working with some lime, which was noticeably softer than yew, which I was also working with; but lime is the hardwood and yew the softwood.

In general the distinction of hardwood/softwood solely due to being deciduous or conifer is true in that the hardest woods are deciduous. But there are plenty of conifers that are harder than most deciduous trees.

The Janka scale measures the hardness of woods, and not surprisingly the slower a tree grows the harder the wood tends to be. The likes of Douglas Fir and Cedar are renowned for their durability.
